Can`t modify file

I have external hardisk (portable drive) i want modify file in my portable drive, but windows 7 can`t save my file :(. If i use flash disk i can modify file in my flash disk. what windows 7 don`t recognize external hardisk / potable drive? Give solution for my problem.

I have files on external drives that I need to access and update. made a small change and then I was not allowed to re-save to the same folder with the same name. Ctrl+S popped up a 'file save' dialogue box and when I navigated to the folder on the external drive and tried to overwrite the original I got Permission Denied. I use windows 7 Home Basic...

when you plug in your external hdd, that's will pop up at computer. right click on it. and see you have security permission set to everyone.

Much better thanks. Sorry aboout the caps before. Who owns the files on the HD? Were the files created in a different OS?

How to Take Ownership in Windows 7

1. Locate the file or folder on which you want to take ownership in windows explorer
2. Right click on file or folder and select “Properties” from Context Menu
3. Click on Security tab

4. Click on “Advance”
5. Now click on Owner tab in Advance Security Settings for User windows

6. Click on Edit Button and select user from given Change Owner to list if user or group is not in given list then click on other users or groups. Enter name of user/group and click ok.

8. Now select User/group and click apply and ok. (Check “Replace owner on subcontainers and objects” if you have files and folder within selected folder)
9. Click ok when Windows Security Prompt is displayed

10. Now Owner name must have changed.
11. Now click Ok to exist from Properties windows
Once you have taken the ownership of file or folder next part comes is Granting Permissions to that file/folder or object.
How to Grant Permissions in Windows 7

1. Locate the file or folder on which you want to take ownership in windows explorer
2. Right click on file or folder and select “Properties” from Context Menu
3. Click on Edit button in Properties windows Click ok to confirm UAC elevation request.
4. Select user/group from permission windows or click add to add other user or group.
5. Now under Permission section check the rights which you want to grant i.e check “Full Control” under the “Allow” column to assign full access rights control permissions to Administrators group.

6. Click Ok for changes to take effect and click ok final ok to exit from Properties window.

No Problem Friend... Yes.... file ceated from another OS... before use windows 7 I use windows XP Profesional. Why if use flash disk file can be modify altough from windows XP.

How to Take Ownership in Windows 7

1. Locate the file or folder on which you want to take ownership in windows explorer
2. Right click on file or folder and select “Properties” from Context Menu
3. Click on Security tab

5. Now click on Owner tab in Advance Security Settings for User windows

Thanks you... but not simple.... just for one folder or one file... I want free modify and update file like windows XP..... why windows 7 not freedom??? Help me....

maybe you can disable UAC, just type UAC in the start menu of control panel of search box.
if that's not solved. so the simple one is my post before take ownership of file or folder.

For ryo... i was try UAC setting... always Access is Denided.

Yes... open windows explorer...right click on your C drive and take ownership of the entire drive... this will take a while though....
