can we capture the router download and upload speed as shown in router

Hi, I am having two details, capable and actual download and upload speed in meba bytes in my router dlink 2730 u model.
Can i capture this actual download and upload speed details in the desktop, so that i need not log in to the router every time to check or to go to speed showing websites .
Is there any trick or any computer application to show the same.
Please experts.
It should just capture the actual speed? or it is not possible without pinging or going to websites to test.

If you want to get the actual download and upload speed, you need to test these speeds by going to a testing website. For example, you could go to www.speedtest.net. It will tell you the actual speeds.

There is no way to get this information without actually running a test on the internet.

If the speed is fluctuating, then that could be caused by any of the components that are between your computer and the computer at the other end of the line, that is, the computer that is being used to test your speed. You have no control over that. But in fact that is the way things are in the real world -- computers go down and up, heavy network traffic is sometimes on the line, slowing down your communication, etc.

The only thing you can do is note the slowest speed, the fastest speed, the average speed, and the speed that you most often achieve. You could also note the speed at different times of the day, or on different days in the week. This information will probably be useful to you in understanding why things are sometimes slow, and in predicting the best (i.e. the fastest) times for getting on the internet.

In your original post, you asked about the capable download and upload speeds. This is the speed you achieve in a laboratory, when all factors are controlled. That is not representative of the real world; the only thing it tells you is what is the very best speed you can achieve when all conditions are perfect.

If you have the option of choosing a different internet service provider, you may find that one gives you a higher speed than the other one. Or maybe they both give the same speed.

If your speed is consistently slow, then perhaps your network is not configured properly, or perhaps one of your networking devices or cables is bad. Checking the actual speed will give you this kind of information.

I come across some network gadgets in rainmeter,but they only show when actual download or upload takes place probably in bytes per second. Can this be made to show in megabytes as in router page. When gadgets could capture the download and upload speed.

Bytes per second or Megabytes per second is irrelevant, the "Per second" part, (or Hour or nano Second), is integral to the measurement of speed. You can use maths to convert one measurement value to another but it will only apply if there is something to measure

You can only measure speed of transfer in real time as to do this you need a transfer in progress to measure. Without a live transfer in process there is no speed to measure, what you can de is state that tests or historical data have shown that the system involved is potentially capable of transferring data at a certain speed The ISP controls this figure to an extent by limiting the maximum achievable, eg. Upto 100 Mbits per second ( approx 12.5 MB/Sec) megabytes is a measure of quantity not speed.

Any attempt to monitor constant speeds is self defeating, as you need to introduce a download and upload to obtain something to measure, indeed to truly measure available bandwidth capability you will need to use 100% of the bandwidth which would leave nothing to actually do any work

What i want, is to get the data on the router on the desktop.For eg, the router shows the upload and download speed at this time, when i write this reply. This is the actual speed at this time. What i want, is just capture this data on my screen to monitor. Could it not be done, like gadgets getting some details from computer.

The internet works by constantly downloading data to display in the Browser window you see and uploading the responses you give. The speed that this data is transferred is dependent on many things including what you are using the PC for at the time, the bandwidth of the server supplying the data is a factor but so is every point on the net that the data travels through so the speed is limited to that of the slowest point in the route. You may be able to monitor and log the raw data but it is unlikely that the cause of any delay will be in an area under your control.

The only chance you have to capture that exact data outside the router is if D-link provide such a facility, (this facility shows the current download status even when you are not actively downloading a file,

There is another possibility, but it's not a popular function these days with the availability of high bandwidth unmetered internet services in most of the world,

this link gives some options to monitor and possibly log internet usage, the figure you get may be, (due to technical issues), slightly different from the actual figures you see in the router but should be close enough to provide information to you for diagnostics, ( Also check if D-Link have their own tray application or option in the router for logging).

You need to be aware that however well written any sampling/logging application is, it will have a performance hit on you system. It should not be major but you need to set the monitor/Logging frequency, where possible, to provide an acceptable result

How to know from where i am getting this total speed when i am not downloading anything or uploading anything? Is it from network adapter ? or is it from router?

You will not get any speed reading if you are not transferring data - Either upload or download.

When You enter a website address into your browser and press enter, the data (text is uploaded to the internet where it goes to that address and the site transmits data back to your computer which is then used to draw the page you see, this consists of all the text, images, graphic elements, videos Etc. This is not exactly the same as if you download a file but uses the same process and so is measurable in the same way. If you are not moving data you cannot measure the speed of the movement

Transfer speeds can be measured in many variations of items over time the standards used are based around Bits per second shown as b/sec or bytes per second B/sec 1B/sec is the same as 8b/sec there are also multipliers such as Mega for million (m)/ Kilo for thousand (k) for multiples of bits or bytes. It has become even mox complex lately as the size of Mega or Kilo is variable eg some treat kilo as 1024 traditional computer measure based on Binary and some use 1000 standard decimal value

Hi, Thanks once again for helpful reply. It would not only help me, but also so much users who sees this thread as there is really confusion of download speed and mega bytes etc.
There is a setting for megabits and megabytes, in which i chose megabits, which is used for download and upload. Megabytes on the other hand denotes the file size one could download per second. I have chosen the megabits, ie mbps instead of MBps.
But, the DL and UL shows more than the router shows?
From where the total DL speed comes when there is No DL or UL, when i close all internet windows browsers?
I will also mail the bit meter developer in this regard.

Edit: The current speed is shown as nil
It is not Total download speed, it is Todays total download in mbs.
So, i have to check with Dlink, if there is any kind of gadgets or options in the router.

The router captures this information via the internal functionality that was built into it. This is not something that you can do anything with, other than what you are already doing.

Have you tried any of the tools that Barman suggested you try?

Hi, Now i understand about the internet travel mechanism. Yes. i did try Bit meter in the link suggested. But , it also just captures the current speed in bits, but there is a setting in the program to change the speed in to megabits, which is easy to read like router statistics. But , i could not get it working.
I also noted , even in rainmeter gadget, in their programs, they have included some speed test net sites, through which you are getting the traffic download and upload speed.
Hats off to Burman, to say clearly which made me to look in to the rainmeter gadgets program, in which they have included code to some sites like speedtest net in the skins.
But rainmeter is useful gadget in the way, that it allows user to change the code. I do not know the code to show the download speed in mbps.
