Can you install Windows 7 to a SD card?

I think u can use SD cards as hard drives with a proper sata converter

INFO: Secure Digital SD SDHC MMC to SATA Adapter Converter - eBay

they do it now with CF cards, why not do it with an SD cards

As long as the Windows installers sees it as a sata drive that may work. But if seen as usb or firewire the setup will cancel on you. Just be prepared for a disappointment if some issue during installation comes up. This would happen if the 7 installer still sees the SD card as an external device.

I purchased a Crucial SSD two weeks ago, just a 64GB for my notebook. The difference in overall performance is absolutely astonishing. Battery life slightly better but the two main things that concerned me are now taken care of; heat and speed.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

This thread is very old. But I have not got thread starting privileges.

It is still relevant to these old questions and answers. How reliable is it to use the new micro SDXC UHS-1 As a bootable WIN 7 OS
The earlier questions had slower bus speeds than today.
I am asking not if one can since I already have done this I am asking if anyone else has and how long there mini portable drives will last when subjected to actual use. If the NVME drives suffer extreme heat. Can I expect this effort to have a small portable solution for my own portability, fail from over heating ?

Why I did this I had an old dead laptop with HDD drive failure other wise junk.
making a bootable USB 3.0 with a 128 GB micro SDXC inserted in it and installing windows 7 on it.

I think it may depend on the manufacture of the SD card. SD cards do have a finite write limit, but I've had a SD card (can't remember the brand) in a netbook that is the storage for a local FTP server and it's been pretty good thus far after at least 6 years now. Though, there aren't as many writes to it as there would be with an OS.

My outdoor camera also uses a SD card, but while only a year old, the point here is that if outdoor cameras and dash cams use a SD card, I can only imagine they'd last a while.

The thing with SD though, and I'm sure you're well aware of is, they are very slow. Even a class 10 SD card will be very slow for an OS. I do think the Linux used in a Raspberry PI uses an SD card.
