can you recommend a book(s) to learn more about computers....

the little I understand about the "parts" and function of my computer limits me ability to not only problem solve, but know how to search and understand solutions...

I probably need to start at... beginner...
but I'd like a book that is thorough

I don't need to be able to build one... but I's like to be more familiar with the terms and functions

I spent some time today reading... and realized.. I need an organized sequence or I'm going to be confused...
I'd look for an online class but sometimes... I work late

I've spent some time these past two weeks with problems
made even more obvious... my lack of general knowledge is a big drawback in phrasing questions for searches and understanding solutions

I'm fascinated but... never had the time
now realizing... I need to invest in better general knowledge...

If you can find it, "Windows 7 for Dummies" is a good start on understanding Windows 7, if you ignore the rather unfortunate title.

If you want to make a career out of computers, do all of the things that have been recommended above. Also, see if you can get an entry-level job assembling or installing computers. In this way, you will be getting paid while you learn. And you will make contacts and have opportunities to learn things and start moving up. If you are diligent and learn as much as you can, you could conceivably have a really good mid-level IT job in as few as five years.

I did desktop support for a very long time -- this is when you fix computer problems hands-on at the computer -- both software and hardware. I'm now doing a combination of helpdesk / SQL database queries / technical documentation / networking. Not only am I doing something I really love, but I'm getting paid to do it!
