Can you reuse Office 2007 product key on returned PC?

Just bought a new computer and prematurely entered my Office 2007 product code on the preinstalled trail version included. Now I plan on returning the computer (long story), does this mean I will now lose 1 of the 3 allowable installs of Office '07? I plan on deleting everything before the return, so maybe that will retain my 3 user licenses?

Not sure about that, my guess is no, but since you bought it, call Micro$oft and ask.

But yes is the answer for using again on different PC, but i would not hold much hope of gaining back the first license. This is Microsoft we are talking about here.

1) Are you sure you can install it on 3 computers?

If you are referring to MS Office Home and Student 2007 edition, that can be installed on up
to three computers.

Retail editions allow installation on one computer and the owner's laptop.

OEM edition is tied to a single computer, moreover the license cannot be transferred to another computer.

To view the MS Software License Terms for your product after it is
installed, do one of the following in these 2007 Microsoft Office system
programs:

Access, Excel, PowerPoint, or Word
Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Program Name Options,
where Program Name is the name of the program you are in, for example, Word
Options.
Click Resources, and then click About.
Click View the Microsoft Software License Terms.

2) Non-OEM editions can be transferred to another computer by first uninstalling on the original computer and then reinstalling on the new one. Depending on how long ago the original install was activated, you may have to do a phone activation. AFAIK, you may reassign the license to a different device any number of times, but not more than one time every 90 days.

You should be able to invalidate your previous installation. That is to say that it wouldn't make much sense for a program to only be allowed to be installed once unless it becomes locked to hardware. Many programs (through the use of DRM software) limit the number of times you can install the software, but most of these instances are revocable as long as you run a particular tool on the system.

In other words, if you can't that seems quite rediculous, but you'll need to speak to Microsoft anyway. If you have an OEM version, most MS OEM software is locked to the original hardware but they usually give you a chance to install on new hardware in the case of hardware failure. However, this requires a call and some pleading. If you purchased a Retail CD Key then you should be able to install the program on a new computer as long as you uninstalled the old copy.

Where are you getting this info that you can only install it three times total? My only concern would be that you properly remove the software from the system before returning it. I'd do this buy restoring the system back to its original state. I would have zero concern about my legit Office 2007 license going forward.
