Can you upgrade the WinPE of your installation media?

I want to reinstall my windows 7 but the installation media I used for my current install only has ultimate, yet I want to install home premium because I have a valid product key for that edition. However, I can't find a version with the new WinPE from Windows 8+ and don't know how to input a modified ACPI.sys. Is there a way I can upgrade the WinPE inside of my installation media so I can do this?

Do you have a Win 7 DVD installation disk, a Win 7 iso file or a Win 7 USB installation drive?

Any installation DVD disk or iso file has all Windows editions. What makes it choose one or the other is \Sources\ei.cfg
If you delete or rename ei.cfg it will ask what version you want to install.

If your Win 7 ultimate is still working you can retrieve the current key using https://showkeyplus.en.softonic.com/

Does the computer has Win 7 or is your desire to have it?
If the the Gigabyte Z590 + i7-11700KF computer has Win 7, the installation drive has been added with USB 3.x, SATA and NVMe drivers.
A normal MS Win 7 installation drive won't install on you Gigabyte Z590 MB
If it does not have Win 7 I don't think it is possible to install Win 7 on it.

It's normally not able to boot into the installation media, I'm trying to figure out if I can upgrade the WinPE to the version that the Windows 8 installation media uses, so I can boot into the installation media and do everything I did previously.
Either that or is there a way I can replace the acpi.sys driver in the WinPE in order for me to boot it that way?
The Windows 7 install is no longer on the drive. The PC doesn't come with Windows 7, however it is possible to install by updating the installation media, and using a modern ACPI.sys file. The older installation media I used to install Windows 7 Ultimate had the Windows 8 version of the WinPE so I could still boot into it, however I can't use it to install Home Premium since it isn't on that installation media.

Is the older installation media (that you used to install Windows 7 Ultimate that had the Windows 8 version of the WinPE) on a DVD or on a USB flash drive?

The standard install.wim contains all the editions. By removing the sources\ei.cfg file, all editions are available at the selection screen.

You could check your media and see if ei.cfg is still there, what it contains and if install.wim has all the editions.

what has that got to do with it?

there should be a sources folder and possibly an ei.cfg file inside it. Even on a flash drive. Unless you have since formatted the flash drive.

I just tried to rip the boot.wim file from the ultimate installation media and it's able to boot into setup but doesn't detect any drives, even ones that windows 7 supports, so that's one other idea that didn't work

In that case why not keep all the original folders and files that are on the usb stick including the boot.wim. Which you seem to think are windows 8

then rename sources\install.wim to something like install-original.wim .

then put a proper windows 7 install.wim which has all the editions in the sources folder.


you can have a look inside the install-original.wim and copy out the acpi.sys file from windows\system32\drivers

it might also be in the winsxs folder

I also figured out that instead of being the WinPE from windows 8, its the WinPE from the windows 10 anniversary update?

I don't think it is possible to install Win 7 on it.
