Can you use upgrade version to make installation genuine

have laptop that used to run Vista. was upgraded to Win7 Ultimate. copy was not
genuine, and get message re same. would like to go genuine. don't need ultimate,
would be happy with professional. will an upgrade version work to convert me to
a legal/genuine copy? thanks in advance for any advice

not yet, I'm trying to figure out if I need a full copy or can use an upgrade copy (much cheaper)
