Candle Smoke

I have never bothered with candles before, but now I have some Lord Byron Smoker's candles, which are supposed to remove tobacco smell from a room. I'm not sure how well that they work, because I have only used one of them for a couple of hours. When I later relit it, it emitted a fairly heavy smoke of it's own, even though I cut the wick to 1/4", as I have read, is supposed to prevent that.

The smoke is heavy enough that it sets off my smoke alarm, so I'm looking for the best way to control the problem. I guess that I could light it outside and let it burn a while, hoping that the smoke would abate, but it would likely blow out very quickly, and I did let it burn for about a minute inside, and it's smoke did not diminish.

I doubt that there is a good answer for the problem, but maybe someone with more candle experience than I may have an idea anyway?

As I have lots of candle and lantern lighting experience none with a Lord Byron Smoker's candle. Candles and especially lanterns draw their wax/fluid differently cold vs hot. I've found that the 1/4 inch rule to be worthless as each wick has it's ideal length. I would allow the candle in this instance to get fully up to temperature even outside with a hurricane shade around it. Once the wax has melted around the wick and is at least 1/2 inch in diameter pool then notice the flame and smut level. If too high please blow out and cut only a small amount at a time and re-light and allow to come up to temp again about 5 minute, still too high blow out and cut again. Less is more ! Once you find the perfect length make a mental note and when it gets too high trim to that lenght. Please note that this will make lighting little more difficult with short wicks but once up to temp you back in business.

This should have been easy, because I bought an old pewter and glass candle holder that has a 3"x9" globe. Unfortunately, the vendor that I bought it from misunderstood, when I asked for the ID, and he measured the OD instead...for "some" reason, a 3" candle doesn't fit inside of a 2 7/8" space. I have been looking for a convenient means to shave the candles a bit.

EDIT: I think that I will just pull the battery out of the smoke detector long enough to burn the candles in.

Candle smut is nasty stuff and I would trim ever so slightly below the current level and try lighting with a window or two open. If the flame gets tall and begins to smut then blow out and trim again till it's controlled and no or little smut occur.
