I have a linux samba share setup that I use for my file server. It's setup for guest access.

Recently when I tried accessing the server, it asked me for a username and password, which it shouldn't. So I typed in guest, didn't work, I typed in the root account, didn't work.

My roommate can still access the server just fine. I checked all the permissions on the linux box, and it has to be an issue with my computer. I had my roommate setup a shared folder on his computer, and I couldn't access it either.

I'm not sure what happened to cause this... one day it worked, the next day it didn't. I tried a system restore thinking maybe some update caused an issue, but that didn't do anything. I've checked various registry keys, made sure the proper services are running. I'm lost as to what could be causing this...

Did you by chance change to a homegroup?

I've always had it set to Home since I installed Vista. I tried switching it to work, didn't change anything though.

Yup, we have a terrabyte media box downstairs running ubuntu. Typical network, 4 pc's, 2 routers.

Oh, and it's not a network issue, as I can still SSH into the box and ping it just fine.

And one other weird thing I noticed, when I do a net view I get this:

C:\>net view
System error 1240 has occurred.

The account is not authorized to log in from this station.

Sounds like you enabled Server Message Block (SMB) signing by accident. Did you happen to enable any settings recently in your Local Security Policy?

Other than the samba share is sharing working on pc to pc level?

GOT IT just gogled the error code and MS has an answer
Err Msg: System Error 1240 Has Occurred. The Account Is Not Authorized to Login from This Station
Hope this helps

Nope, that's not it either. I'm running samba 3.x which supports NTLMv2 passwords, plus the share is set to a guest account which doesn't use a password. I've tried changing that registry key and specifically setting encrypted passwords on the samba box as well.

My roommate who's running Vista which is NTLNv2 can still access the box fine.

Just curious, have you tried from another user on the same computer to see if you can pinpoint the problem to a per machine or per user problem?

Didn't work. :(

This is driving me nuts. I'm getting so frustrated I'm fixing to just format my computer. I've been a server admin for years and have never had an issue that has made me pull out my hair so much.

EDIT: Yes I tried creating a new user.

And make sure you don't have any cached credentials that you are attempting to connect with prior to getting the authentication prompt. This will cause problems.

Two things to try:

1- See if you can connect via the IP address rather than the NETBIOS name. i.e. \\10.0.1.13\Share

2- Check for cached credentials in control userpasswods2, Advanced tab, Manage Passwords

Edit: Saw your reply, if it happens w/ the another user then neither of the above would help

Ok so this is weird. It's a problem with my router. I bypassed my router and connected to our main gateway wirelessly, and I can connect fine now. Gotta check my router and see what's blocking it, something must be blocking windows file sharing on it, since I could still ping and SSH into the linux box.

Guess it wasn't an issue with my computer afterall! But thanks for your help everyone.

I take that back, still try using the IP Address.

Also do you have the Online ID (Windows Live ID) component installed? It is used remote media streaming but causes problems w/ SAMBA shares. Don't ask me why though

Glad it worked w/o the router but it may still be an issue w/ your W7 network setup. W7's firewall could be dedecting multiple networks and granting different rights to each.
