Solved Cannot access second hard drive

Since I've reinstalled Windows and upgraded my motherboard, graphics card etc, my computer hasn't been able to see my other harddrive when it could before..
How do I make it accessible again?

Try going into bios and make sure the drive is set to Auto or Enable.

Was it a split partition like a C and D drive? Or a separate hard drive altogether?

They are 2 separate drives

It is all wired correctly, I just can't get it to show up in Windows explorer.. i think I can see it in the device manager, but i am not sure :S

You may have to do a "refresh" or "rescan" in Windows Disk Management. The drive needs to be formatted and assigned a drive letter.

Formatted????? Is there anyway at all I can recover the drive without formatting? Some very valuable files on there.

You could try to image it with a live CD. Maybe that can find it. Options that come to mind are:

1. The Hirens CD 15.1 where you can boot into an XP environment which has Macrium 4.2. as an option. That is a fast aprroach. http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

2. The other option is if you burn the WinPE CD from the free Macrium program. That gives you a bootable Windows7 option. It is a bit long though to burn it because Macrium downloads the WAIK from MS which is 1.7 GBs. But if you are patient, that is a good option. http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

In both cases you get a VHD on your external disk which you can later mount (just double click on the image) and retrieve your data.

I would probably first try the Hirens because it is the quicker way and with the XP environment, you may have more luck accessing the drive.

Solved when I had to reinstall windows on my PC. for some reason it meant i was able to see/use my other HDD and all the files were still there. weird :huh:
