I have a laptop dual-booting Win7 and Ubuntu and a desktop running WinXP. The WinXP computer has a printer attached to it that I want to share with my laptop. I did this very easily in Ubuntu but cannot get it done in Win7.
When I go into "Network" and click on the WinXP computer's icon, I get a message saying "Windows cannot access \\(computer name)". When I click on "Diagnose", it says that the computer cannot be found even though it is on and they share the same workgroup name.
Sometimes the icon doesn't even show up.
"Network discovery" is turned on.
Sharing is obviously functional since I can access the printer from Ubuntu, but how come it doesn't work in Win7?

Go through this tutorial about sharing with XP, click on the XP tab, it should help.

This one is more general but has good info.
Networking home computers running different versions of Windows

After going through all of that if you are still having file access problems try doing this registry adjustment on the Win 7 machine with the problem.

Solution is really easy just modify one key in registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
create or modify 32-bit DWORD: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
set the value to: 1

Well I use the Windows Firewall and apparently nothing needs to be changed about it.

Also am I supposed to run the network setup wizard on all computers like it tells me to do in WinXP? I ran it on my Win7 computer but got an error.

I am having the same problem, accept it is between a laptop and a desktop both running 7 home premium. I was able to share files and such for a day, but now only the laptop can access the desktop's files and folders, and no copying/pasting can take place for file transfer between the two.

I disabled the Homegroup and restarted my computer and now there is nothing in "Network" other than my router...

Mmm - just thought - have you reset your router/switch and tried connecting again - had problems with a old netgear router that caused ' similar' problems - just a maybe..................
