in windows vista I could block startup programs i didnt want using up system resourses, but with windows 7 I cant find a way of doing that, I understand its always a good idea to have normal startup mode instead of selective in msconfig. but in vista I could simply block programs in component services but the ones I want to block are not even listed in windows 7! is this the wrong place to look or is blocking startup programs not an option in windows 7?

You should use msconfig (Start search) to disable startup items.

CCleaner (if you use it) has the same function, you can also use that.

Hi Genxie and welcome

In win 7 (as in vista) you want to stop services by using services.msc not msconfig. Servises is global but msconfig is user based. In services.msc you can block anything you want but 6 months down the line may forget that XX isnt running.

If you need a site to look at what service does what in win 7, there is alwasy black vipers.

Good luck

Take a look in msconfig under the startup tab. It's fine for the selective startup to be checked btw....mine is.

I'll do that last one. thanks, although that app for finding info on system specs - speccy - says - in beta form should only be used by advanced users ( I'm not ) on test machines - just ignore that and choose one of the two download options?
