Cannot change network location to access Homegroup share

Hi,

I have an Aspire X3960 (Win7 Prem 64bit) which is connected to the internet via cable. However when I tried to add it to the homegroup I created I noticed the LAN icon in the system tray had a red x against it. When I looked in cpanel at network and sharing centre no location is selected and it advises that the machine is not connected to the internet even though it clearly is as I can receive email and browse the web. I have tried the below:

1) I checked if network discovery was switched on and it was.

go to the device manager
select network card – No network card, has network adapters, expand that for Intel network connection
right hand mouse button and go to properties - check
then the advanced tab - check
find network address – no network address only thing with address was – locally administered address
select not present – that was already selected (not present)
Now go to start and type CMD at the prompt type: -
ipconfig /release
Enter
ipconfig /renew
Enter

Wee icon on bottom right had yellow triangle for 2 seconds then went back to red x
4) Updating network card driver

Usually just reinstalling the Ethernet driver will fix these types of problems.

If that doesn't work then unzip and run the file below which will reset the entire network stack, flush the DNS, reset winsock and TCP/IP among other things.

Hi,

gave the attached a go. Still no change. I notice the current profile is defaulting to Public in the network and sharing centre. It will not allow me to change to work or home. Also checked and Windows firewall is off.

If you already tried reinstalling the driver then try resetting the router.

Not sure on this as usually just reinstalling the driver fixes this.

Are you also not able to turn on the Windows firewall?

It can also be fixed by deleting Incoming Connections in Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings.

Hi,
I tried to delete Incoming Connections in Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings. However the option to delete was greyed out. Also checked the Firewall. Currently it is set to be managed by my Kaspersky 2014 Internet Security. Do you think the registry change would work? I wonder if my user profile is corrupt somehow as not allowing me full administrator access to delete the adapter and change the network location. Looking more and more likely a fresh install of windows will be in order which I was trying to avoid

If the User profile was corrupted you can just create a new User with Admin rights then move your files over to the new account.

With Kaspersky involved there is no telling what influence it may be having here. I would start by uninstalling Kaspersky using the uninstall tool.
