I am trying to copy over from my IDE drive a couple of folders to cut & paste to a small USB flash drive (K)
But I get this error message " Could not find this item. " This is no longer in J/???? which I know for a fact is not true because it is, any thoughts forthcoming most appreciated.:(

Have you tried to open 2 Windows Explorer pages and drag and drop the file. What is then? Again it doesn't find it?

You're having problems copying from the external storage onto the USB drive, correct?
can you copy from J:\ to the internal storage i.e C:\ or are you having problems copying regardless
of the destination?

If you try to copy that file from J: in another place-folder again in J:, is it possible?
What it tell you?
(I'm not a "Guru", just I'm telling you what I would try if I had the same problem)

YoYo155 & notis: I have tried copy/cut&paste to my C drive desktop I still get the cannot find this item it is no longer in ????, I know it is because they are MP3 songs amounting to 80 Mb which I played earlier via my VLC media player. I have downloaded & run folderfix incase it was a registry problem...........it isn't, must admit I am quite savvy with computers but this niggly little problem has me stumped, the only thing I have done in the last 6 days is cloned my C drive (Sata) to my 250 gig Samsung 840 Pro SSD, cheers anyway for replying.

Is it only those particular files? Can you copy other files from that drive? Can you copy files from C: to it?

I wonder if it might be a permissions thing, have you tried "taking ownership" of the files in question?

Cannot copy anything over from that IDE drive, will look into Take Ownership?

Another action I'd do is to see in properties if I have to unblock the files. Also if not one file from J: can be copied and after all the above tests, I'd check the health of the external drive, chkdsk etc.

I've thought of that and over the years I have run chkdsk on my C drive, any ideas how I get it up and running on an external drive because I'm running 1 SSD drive (C) 4 internal SATA drives (varying numbers) & 6 external IDE drives (not all connected at the same time) and I would to run it on some of the drives.

....and like Strollin request, I'd try all the possible relations, eg.To copy from K: to J:, from C: to K:, C: to K:, etc..... So you'll know exactly which device has the problem.
Did you ask how you can run chkdsk in an external drive? You can from properties of the disk and then tools, then check or if you know from a cmd (command prompt) "chkdsk J:"

I think the answer might be in the red type above.
When you attach an Ext HD to your PC via USB it is given the next Drive letter by Windows. Add another ExtHD and depending whch USB socket you use for the second drive that can alter the Drive letter of the first drive. The way to overcome this is to give all you ext hard drives a dedicated letter each somewhere near the top end of the alphabet so you have V drive, W Drive, X Drive, Y Drive, Z Drive. Then when you connect a USB stick (Which you cant give a dedicated drive letter to) that will use the lower end of the alphabet. J Drive etc. To give a drive a dedicated letter see here:

Delighted it worked. Thanks for the feedback!
Still worth giving all the drives a dedicated letter. Doesn't matter if you disconnect them, thet will retain the letter when next connected!
