I agree with the Macrium recommendation. I now use Macrium exclusively. Although I had no problems with Windows inbuilt it is limited in capability and others report error behavior in Windows inbuilt from time to time.
Note that the above tutorial link is for Macrium 5.1. The new version is V6 which is fine but the user interface looks a little different but still straightforward to use.

Thank you both. OK,I just downloaded Macrium and will give it a go tomorrow. Wondering why Windows doesn't work. I just want to be sure my system is OK.
That's fair enough. I'm not sure what you did with chkdsk but you should be checking your internal HDD and presumably the external HDD you are using to store the system image. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/952272
You can try the HDD manufacturers diagnostics as well. Just be careful their full scan doesn't wipe your drive. I stick to their quick scans and only use a full scan on a blank drive.

Sorry for the delay....finally had a chance to go fishing, so you know how that goes. I took all your advice ( most appreciated ) and am now using Macrium...which I really love. I found it very user friendly and I created a system image and a recover media disc as well. Life is good. Thank you very much.
You have your priorities right. It's beautiful country you live in.
Good to hear that Macrium is working for you. Make sure you can boot from your rescue disc, locate your system image and mount it. When you mount it you should be able to browse your imaged drive (then unmount).
