Cannot delete edit modify rename or alter files in any way!?!?!?

i am enraged, i have been having this problem for a bit, i disabled uac, i gave my user account full access permissions on all files and it still says i dont have permission, my hard drive is almost full now and i cannot delete stuff so i just wanna lay into microsoft with the force of 1000 suns

note: the files i am having problems with arent even on the C: drive, they are on my shared partition (i use this partition for documents music etc and just about everything that is not windows only)

any help would be much appreciated -thx

Have you taken ownership of your data drive? http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1911-take-ownership-shortcut.html
After you take ownership, you will still need to grant yourself permission to the drive.

Is the shared partition connected to this machine or is it connected to another machine and you are accessing it via the network?

the shared partition is on this machine, i do not currently use any sharing over my network (i have enough problems accessing files on my own machine so i may try that after i get to where i can access what is on this machine first)

also i would like to try that take ownership but i just want to edit the registry myself rather than downloading a reg file, any links to a tutorial on doing the edit myself?

Right-click a file/folder/drive, click Properties then enter the Security tab. Now hit Advanced then the Owner tab.

yeh, i saw that, but i just dont like to use a reg file thats not made by me
but if anyone knows how which registry key(s) that i need to change for that
than i will just edit my registry myself

The problem is likely that the drive on the other partition were created by a different user account. Even if by you on a previous version of windows. If you did not "transfer" your user account from the old windows to Windows 7 then the files are still owned by the older user which windows has no idea is physically YOU.

The proper thing to do (for future reference) is to transfer your user acount from windows to windows. Then all your files will still be owned by you.

But if that is not possible for some reason or you change accounts on purpose then the take ownership shorcut is the fastest way to transfer ownershp of the files "back to yourself" (to your new user account)...

well, this computer is new so this is the only windows ever installed on it
but i took ownership of the drive and have had no problem since
but i would still like to know what registry key to edit to add the "take ownership" to the right click menu

.REG files themselves are actually text files.

So you can DL them and open them in a text editor. I /always/ do that to make sure it isn't adding anything "funny"

TEWS post there is in fact merely the contents of the takeonwership.reg file loaded into notepad (or some text editor) if I'm not mistaken

Like me, if you feel uncomfortable downloading unknown registry editors you can simply right click on the file/folder/drive you want to take ownership of, go to properties, select the security tab, click edit, and from there you'll see where you can change ownership.
