Hello all,

Recently I have been experiencing difficulty in installing the service pack 1 update for my Windows 7. Every time I try to install it, it stops around 20% or so and gives me a 8007312 error. Any help would be greatly appreciated!:)

attached is my CBS log, per the posting instructions.

thanks,

MU5ICI4N

It looks to me as if you have some registry corruption.

I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

Here we go...

I've uploaded a file - m4naa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on the file and select Extract All, and save to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

Create a new System Restore point

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

Code:
[/FONT][/COLOR]
[COLOR=black][FONT="Segoe UI"]IF EXIST C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.OLD1 DEL C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.OLD1[/FONT][/COLOR]
[COLOR=black][FONT="Segoe UI"]REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1[/FONT][/COLOR]

[COLOR=black][FONT="Segoe UI"] [/FONT][/COLOR]
[COLOR=black][FONT="Segoe UI"].

If you get an error with either command, STOP THERE - do not reboot! - post for instructions.

Assuming both commands go OK, reboot, and run another CheckSUR scan - post the new CheckSUR.log file.

Noel,

Thanks for the help! :)

I downloaded the m4naaa file, extracted it to my desktop, created a system restore point, opened an elevated command prompt, then ran the following commands:

IF EXIST C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.OLD1 DEL C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.OLD1
This command gave me no trouble, I hit ENTER and it seemed to register

I then ranREN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
This command went smoothly as well

Then I triedCOPY "%userprofile%\desktop\m4naa\COMPONENTS" C:\Windows\System32\config, but I got the error "The system cannot find the file path specified"

I noticed that you seemed to be talking about two commands, but it seemed like 3 to me, one for each line. should I have done all three? I've included a picture of my command prompt window.

cheers:D

Sorry about that - I recently added the topmost line to reduce confusion, and haven't modified the instruction to suit :(

Where did you extract the file to?

run the following command

DIR %userprofile%\desktop\components /s

post the results.

Noel,

No problem!:) glad to know I didn't mess up by running a command I shouldn't have. I extracted the file to the desktop, but I think I found the source of the problems. The file I downloaded is calledm4naaa, not m4naa as specified in the program I ran.

did I download the right file? If so, should I alter the actual name of the file to suit the command or alter the command to suit the name of the file?

Cheers:)

Just me being shaky-fingered 'cos of my cold :(
carry on, either change the name of the extracted folder, or change the command to suit.

Sorry about that!

Sorry for the delay getting back. A cold, eh? bummer. that time of year again I suppose:(

I renamed the file to m4naa, and all of the commands ran smoothly! the command that gave me trouble before instead said something like "Files Copied".

Next, I rebooted per your instructions, but upon startup windows tried to run a CHKDSK Scan, which I cancelled. Should I have cancelled the scan?

After cancelling the scan, I ran a CheckSUR scan and I have included the log file (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log)

Cheers :)

Great - CheckSUR shows clear of errors now.

Please run another SFC /SCANNOW - if that also comes back 'no violations found' try Windows Update again, after a new Check for Updates.

If not all clear, please post the new CBS.log file.

I ran the SFC /SCANNOW command, and unfortunately it said it encountered corrupt files :(

It should also be mentioned that when I was starting up my computer to run the command, my computer ran another CHKDSK that I was unable to cancel in time. could the CHKDSK have reversed any of the progress we made before?

attached is my CBS.log file

thanks again

The fact that CHKDSK ran means that Windows detected file corruption - and attempted to fix it itself... This could indicate failing hardware, so we'd better have a closer look...

Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
Save the file as Appevt.evtx
Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.

I'm beginning to suspect that your machine is infected with something nasty :(

What AV are you using? If it's MSE, then the updates aren't installing- and haven't been for two weeks.

I do use Microsoft Security Essentials... Is this definitely a software problem, or is there any possibility of a hardware failure (like hard drive?) I'm just asking because I may back up all of my important files and reinstall windows all together, but I don't want to do this if I just have to replace my hard drive or something.

Thanks again:)

The hard drive looks OK to me - there are no bad sectors showing in the event logs, merely the result of improper shutdowns, I think.

Ah ok, thats a relief that my hard drive is ok! I was about to replace it because I figured it was the cause of all of the corrupt files.

Regarding the improper shutdowns, what would qualify as an improper shutdown? And what was the result of these shutdowns- the corrupt files?

Thanks again:)

An improper shutdown can be hardware or software related.
Hardware causes are power outages caused by either failure or mistakenly switching off the power before the machine has fully shut down. They can also be caused by overheating components, which may suddenly shut down the machine to prevent permanent damage.

Software causes are where a program or the OS itself crashes, leading to incomplete file writes.

hmmm I think my computer falls in the software side of things, it crashes quite often usually with memory_management errors :(

Sorry if this is not appropriate for the Windows Update subforum, but do you have any idea from looking at the Logs what these crashes are caused from? (Hardware or software?) and if they could be fixed by formatting my hard drive and reinstalling windows?

Thanks for the help :)
