I am trying to get Office updates on Windows 7 HP, but when I click on the "Find out more" link to activate Microsoft update nothing happens - it behaves as it were a dead link.

I'm wondering if this may be because IE isn't installed as I have a European version that shipped without it and I use Firefox as my browser.

Windows updates works fine. A vista box I have worked OK too - I recall it opened the update website which made me think the abscence of IE was the issue.

Browsing to the update site manually just tells me that access is through the control panel now.

I'd rather not install IE unless I have to to make this work.

Any ideas?

Tried that but it makes no difference (I wasn't hopeful TBH). I've downloaded the Service packs manually but there's a boat load of security and other stuff too going back years (this is Office 2000pro) and I'd rather Windows sort it out for me! I can't be the only person with this issue (assuming it's generic) but can't find anything about it by searching online.

You could try installing IE8, settingitas your default browser then trying the link again then uninstalling IE. It's long winded but it may just work ;)

Although I cannot find definitive confirmation from Microsoft It would appear that Office 2000 is not supported by windows update.

http://www.google.co.uk/url?url=htt...Q&sa=X&ei=pujbTJ2TDpSDhQehqP3-Dw&ved=0CDsQygQ

As Office 2000 is no longer supported by Microsoft in any way since 2009 this is not an issue if you have office 2000 installed as there are no longer any updates being produced. This includes security updates.

The route that you have used to download the service packs is apparently the only route open to users.

Microsoft has advised all office 2000 users to upgrade to a more recent version as the suite is now open to any vulnerabilities that were not patched before Mid 2009

Hmmmm.... well, I'm not sure that explains why the clickling the link does nothing (all it should do is enable the checkboxes in update>settings control panel - although it does go to the microsoft updates website as part of the process) but it makes it a completely moot point anyhow. As the link says "This is not a limitation for existing installations of Office 2000......However, it is a serious limitation for anyone re-installing Office 2000" Which is where I'm at. I'm not keen on upgrading to a later version just to get updates and really no-one seems to think the later versions are any better as far as I can tell. The odd thing is when I did this on a vista box a short while ago (certainly after Aug 2009 when the support supposedly stopped) I'm sure I did get some Office related updates. Oh well, thanks to all.

The part that would worry me is the lack of security updates with office 2000, there were a lot of vulnerabilities patched in the final year of support and The fact that support has ended is not likely to have stopped the search for vulnrabilities.

If you do not use Outlook for you mail then something like the free OpenOffice may be usable for you without the potential security risks of continuing with office 2000
