Solved Cannot get drives to come up as letter i want
Installed win Pro x64 as fresh and started off with single 500GB SSD split into 2 partitions, used the second partition to take images of the first untill i had everything set up the way i liked then, got rid of D partition to make single 500GB SSD Windows drive all went well.
However when i tried to put in old spinners i cannot get first spinner to come up as drive D, so had a nose round here and came across this thread here:

but it's not working and still can't get it to read as drive D.
Anyone have any other suggestions?

Now it's getting weird, used a m8 Aomei Partition Assistant Pro v5.6 boot disc and even using that it would not allow me to give a drive the letter D

You didn't mentioned if you have a ODD. If you have a ODD it may had D: assigned to it. Then you must fist assign another letter to it and then assign D: to the HDD
