I recently reinstalled Windows on an Acer 64 bit desktop. (X1420G-U5832). I installed it from the Acer backup partition. Everything was fine except for my McAfee antivirus. Although I could install McAfee Security Suite itself, I could not get the antivirus bit to install. After the reinstall I did well over 1000 Windows updates, and there was nothing left but the optional Bing toolbar which I abhor.

So I contacted McAfee and let them take remote control. They couldn't get it to install either, and they navigated to Windows Updates where there were 4 important updates that were not there yesterday.. While they were still on the phone, but after they'd ended the screen sharing session, I downloaded those 4 updates. One of the updates did not install and McAfee told me that the lack of an updated system was why their antivirus would not install. They refused to help me anymore, saying that I should contact Microsoft. Right....

After I slammed down the phone on them I noticed that there were now 2 important updates to install. One of them was IE11. I tried to install that separately but got an error. I tried the other update. That also failed. I downloaded the offline installation package of IE11, That failed. I checked on just what version of internet explorer I was using - it was IE8. I downloaded the offline installation package of IE10, That also failed. I downloaded Firefox. That worked. I tried to uninstall IE8, but it didn't show up under view installed updates, so I unchecked it from Turn Windows Features On and Off, and tried to install IE11 or 10.

No go...

This is the 5th of your forums to which I've posted. The last forum was System & Security where I was told to post to this forum after following Windows Update Posting Instructions. The first thing these instruction s want is for me to download and run a System Update Readiness Tool. I have done that. I have since gone back into Windows Updates. Only one important update was listed and it was not IE11. I successfully installed that one update.
I then went back to Programs and Features, Turned IE8 back on and rebooted. Then I went back to Windows Updates. Still nothing at all for Internet Explorer, but several optional Windows 7 updates. I attempted to install them, and got the msg sent here as an attachment. Rebooting brought me 6 new important updates (where were these important updates 10 minutes ago?) one of which was IE11. I installed those updates. They all went through except for IE11. See second attachment. Rebooting yet again give me one important update. IE11, of course.
I don't get it
**********
Fixed it myself with the aid of the System Update Readiness Tool.

you shouldn't have to install IE11 to get Mcafee working, let me ask you this are you still running IE8 or was you able to upgrade to IE9 or 10 and if i were you on IE11 just hide that update because it has all kinds of compatibility view issues you can check in another section of the forums about user complaints of IE11

Well, this computer was already successfully using IE11 before it crashed. And it seems to be successfully using it now. The SURT that someone in the System Security suggested I download allowed me to perform all the Windows updates except for IE11, but I was then able to run the offline installation of IE11. And yes, we were able to get McAfee installed, It's certainly not my tool of choice, but the subscription came out of my brother's pocket, not mine.
