Hello, i'm having trouble getting onto the internet with my wired settings on my desktop. I usually have it connected through wireless (I have a pci-e wireless card), but when i try with my ethernet cable, it doesnt connect. I have two OS's installed on this computer windows 7 and vista. I have tried to on both windows to get on the net, but to no avail. I have tried the diagnose and repair, but it doesnt fix anything. :/ It does however, says "Windows cannot connect to the primary DNS Server" or something like that.

AKPSP:

Re your DNS server and connecting to the internet.
Have you looked at the settings of your network card? It should be set to automatically pick up an IP and the DNS settings from your DHCP server, which probably is your router.

go to system settings and look at the network card properties and look at ipv4 settings to make sure that they are set to use dhcp for all the settings.

Rich

PS: You will probably have to tell windows something about whether the network is public, work or private..

I have dos 6.22, wfwg 3.11, win98, 2000 and xp VHD's available for testing. MS's Virtual PC works great.
Everything in the network settings are set to automatic.

When i hook up the ethernet cable, the router isnt hooked up. just straight through from the dsl to the computer. Also, when i have the ethernet cable in, i cant set it to Home network. Its stuck on public network and i cant switch it to home network. :/

i hope i'm reading this wrong but it sounds like your trying to connect your dsl cable into your computer and skip the router.

this won't work as your router is your dhcp giving your pc the ip address.

dsl -> router -> pc

what are you talking about? it will work since that is how you hook it up if you are only using one computer.

you may have the settings wrong in the TCP/IP settings on both windows.
do you have another network cable so that you can use the router?

One problem that rises up is that by connecting your dsl modem directlry to your PC, you better have a real good firewall and only the required ports open. Your pc is on the internet and the scanners will find you and keep trying to open some wierd port on your computer. If you do get the modem connected directly to your pc, of course to do this it is a good idea to turn off the modem. turn off the PC and turn on the modem, after a few seconds, then turn on your PC. Of course some dsl modems are really routers in the same box. But if your modem requires a userid and password, some require you to run a program on your pc that provides the userid and password to the dsl modem.

I personally never allow my friends to not use a router if the dsl provider doesn't provide a modem/router which uses IP translation so that your local computer has a 192.160.xxx.xxx address and is not internet routable. Confusing but it does provide some level of protection from the bad guys on the internet.

If you persist on connecting your dsl directly to your pc, I suggest that you go to GRC.COM and check shields up to see how much your protected..
