I've gone through a lot of work to create my own custom memory card for my classic xbox, including learning how to solder wires! But now I've hit a snag on what should be the easiest thing.

I need to install a driver to coordinate with my modified USB drive, but when I try to do it I get this message:
"The folder item you specified doesn't contain a compatable driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems."

Does that mean that I am completely out of luck since I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium?

Thanks so much for your help. Going on four hours of insanity now...

the xbox uses its own O/S based loosely on the win2k kernel and i always believed the modified memory cards where used only on the xbox , if its supposed to interface with a PC then there should be a specific PC driver ?

Let me say before I continue, because I know there seems to be confusion - modifying an Xbox is NOT an illegal act. This is covered under the federal Bill of First Sale. What *IS* illegal is utilizing pirated copies of games, which I am NOT going to do. I am attempting to turn my Xbox into an entertainment center a'la GoogleTV.

That being said, here is a link to the guide I am using for my conversion:
HOW TO: Use a USB Thumbdrive as a Memory Card (For Softmod) - AfterDawn: Forums

So I soldered the USB/controller cord together and it works perfectly. The Xbox reads it and I can copy files from the Xbox's internal hard disk to the USB memory card. Additionally the Xbox reformatted the memory card to be compatible WITH the Xbox, so the PC wants to format it.

The software that I need to utilize on my PC is called Action Replay, which I bought a copy of. What I don't have is the USB cord and original Xbox memory card that Action Replay comes with. This is why I have to convert the USB flash drive into an Xbox memory card - and THAT is what the driver in question is supposed to do.

So what I am SUPPOSED to be able to do is to go into device manager, go into the USB flash drive (currently identified by my system as "USB Mass Storage Device," and then manually direct it to the driver which should then install the "Maxdrive Xbox" drivers onto my computer. This will then make it so that the computer, using the Action Replay software, can read the USB drive even though it is not formatted as a PC drive.

I hope that all made sense. XOXO

jaybeebrad, do you have the driver in a folder on your laptop? or is it on the usb drive? :)

The driver is in a folder on my laptop. Currently the laptop cannot read the USB drive because the USB drive is formatted to work with Xbox; the PC recognizes the drive as a USB device but it cannot read from it; it wants me to format it. The driver sets up the PC to be able to interact with the USB drive without formatting the USB drive as a PC drive.

Basically the USB drive is now functioning as if it were a memory card for Xbox, and this driver makes it so that the PC can read memory cards for Xbox.

I'm going to bed now, but I can say that it was meant to run with Windows versions up to XP; and that I'm not sure how you would use compatibility mode on a driver...

It's for drivers also (remember a driver is just a program) if it has a .exe you right click on it select properties>compat> run as xp etc>run as admin :)

ah yes, but this driver is an *.inf file. When I go into properties it doesn't even give me a compatibility tab. That's what I meant to say. I tried changing it to .exe and running it as admin in xp and 2000, no luck :(

I dont think you will be able to install a.inf file which are basically x86 drivers on a x64 bit system ,I personally think XP Mode is your best bet http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8247-windows-xp-mode-install-setup.html thats about as far as I can go :(

Unfortunately XP mode cannot be used on Windows 7 Home Premium. And I think there's still some confusion because this is a much much much older driver, so I don't think it's x86...

Right now I am installing Windows 2000 on a virtual machine in the hopes this will work. I'll let you know!

Ha, shows you what I know! :D

Well, now I'm in a whole new crisis because somehow my laptop crashed entirely while setting up Win2000 on the virtual machine, and every time I try to log in in anything but safemode I crash to a blue screen.

So, obviously figuring out WTH just happened is going to take priority...
