Cannot Install New HDD.

Hi Guys
I am trying to install an extra Hard Drive inside my machine. Everything connects ok via the cables etc and i set the new Hard Drive to slave, however when I boot up my computer, (Having told it to boot from my existing Hard Drive), it just hangs or doesn’t do anything, then, thinking I have done something wrong, take out the new Hard Drive and then it has to repair my boot up.
My current HD is a WDC as below and the extra one I am trying to install is a Hitachi Deskstar HDT725025VLAT80.
My main HD is 64bit and is connected to the motherboard with a thin black cable into a little square plug and my new HD is connected to the motherboard via the long thin connector like they all used to be. An ATE/IDE I think.
What do i need to do to get my new HD to work?

try connecting the new hdd without the pin for master/slave selection, just pull it out and give it a try, no need to set it as slave if it's the only one connected to the IDE port

Try setting the drive select jumper to CS (cable select) and double check the IDE cable. Make sure the correct connector is connected to the motherboard and that you don't have one end flipped over back wards. It should be keyed so you can't reverse it but it doesn't hurt to double check it. When you boot up is it detected correctly in the BIOS? If yes double check your boot order to make sure the SATA drive is your boot drive.

Some hard drives do not slave well with other hard drives. If your PC supports 4 drives, i.e. a Master 0 and Slave 0 and Master 1 Slave 1 configuration I'd place the Hitachi in the Master 1 position and try that. The other option is see if placing the Hitachi alone as Master w/o the WDC cable plugged in will give you a no OS message, if it won't you have other issues.

Well, thanks guys, after of hours I tried it with another HD I had and no problem, however the Hitachi I was trying it with was a no go as this came out of my old machine. Is there a way to format the Hitachi from boot up into command prompt as on the Hitachi it must have a boot record thus conflicting with mt existing HD. If that makes sense.

It might help to reformat and re-zero that HD using Dban.

Have a look around the Hitachi web site for a utility to zero the drive. Most hard drive manufacturers supply free utilities to make bootable media to test and prepare their drives. I've done it with Western Digital drives in the past. I would unplug your other drive just to make sure you don't nuke the wrong one.

I wold set your Bios to only boot from the WD SATA HD. All other entries dis-abled for boot up. Then see if you can see the Hitachi IDE drive in Disk Management.
