Hello to all. I have an AMD X64 dual computer with 4 gb of ram, I also have a 250 GB hard drive running Linux Mint 9, a 320 GB hard drive that I installed Windows 7 pro 64 bit and it ran great. Unfortunately the 320 GB HD died so i bought a new 500 GB HD but when i try to install Windows 7 on it, it won't install..The initial setup screen starts just fine I accept, the install screen comes up and I choose custom and when I pick the HD I want to install on, it tells me it cannot find a file system or something like that. I've tried and have succeeded in formatting it as NTFS and still I cannot install...PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks for any assistance.

PS I have since tried reinstalling Windows XP Pro and I get the same thing...hmmmmm????

Welcome Steve.
Can we assume that you have disconnected your linux hard disk and only using the new 500 gig set up as your C Drive? That would be the best method so that the windows install does not screw up your linux install.

Booting the DVD with windows on it will then allow you to partition the new 500 gig hard disk. It wants to create a small 100meg boot partition on it and then you can install windows 7 x64. Windows is probably barfing on the fact that your linux disk does not have space for the windows 7 boot partition..

The simpler you keep it the better.

richnrockville, first, thanks for your reply and to your question, no i didn't disconnect the linux hd. When i originally installed windows it was on the second hard drive and there was no problem installing it, I just chose the second HD when windows asked where to install it and it worked fine. I will try your suggestion and let you know asap. Again thanks.

Steve, Are you using the grub loader to load linux, you might have to have an expert give you advice on how to install the loader to allow you to run windows 7 when you boot.

How to Dual Boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu

I agree though, leaving only the Hard Disk Drive you want to install Windows to connected for the install is the best option that way Grub won't be involved it the dual boot process between Windows and Linux.

Then you can use the BIOS one-time boot menu to select which OS/HDD to boot when the PC is booted.

Guys, thank you all for all your help. richnrockville, I did what you suggested and disconnected the linux HD and that worked perfectly. I'm happy to say that now I have 3 hard drives, 2 with linux and the other with win 7 and after loading the second linux last, grub allows me to choose whichever OS I want at startup. WOOHOOO!!! lol, what a geek, i love it. Again thanks for all the replys, I do soooo love forums
