If i receive a .ppt e-mail attachment, I cannot open it directly, but when I go into explorer file associations, all Powerpoint extensions are properly associated with Windows Power Point Viewer. If I go into Control Panel Default Programs,Powerpoint viewer is not even on the list.

I can work around it by saving the attachment into a new folder, then opening Power Point Viewer, then opening the the saved file.

I am using Microsoft Office Starter Edition. Is that the problem? I can download and install a new Powerpoint Viewer, but I hate to clutter up my computer when I already have the right program on hand!

Hello Looksha, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Are you able to save the attached .ppt to say your desktop, then click/double click on the .ppt file to have it open automatically in PowerPoint Viewer?

Yes. I can open the file when stored in a folder or on the desktop by double clicking on it. The association is there, but I cannot open it by double clicking on the attachment in Windows Live Mail. Interesting.

You need to disable the security feature in the Live Mail Options, click on File, Options, Safety options. Then click on the Security tab and disable the option 'Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that potentially can be a virus'.

Thanks, but that's not it

I am aware of the settings to reject attachments. I went to Tools, Safety options, security, and the box to prevent attachments from being opened or copied is not checked. I had already stated that I can copy the .ppt attachments to the desktop or into a folder, and open it from there, so this is not the issue here. Hower, thanks much for your comments. I get the standard dialogue box "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action..." even though the file associations are in place in Windows. It acts as if Windows Live Mail is isolated from Windows 7.
