Solved Cannot read or write to various Ext HDD's as Windows Explorer Crashes

Hi Guys,

Low level of technical expertise on my end here.

Windows explorer keeps crashing whenever I try to read or write from either my Toshiba 1TB Ext HDD or my Kingston 4GB flash drive. Both these drives work perfectly on other computers...

Please bare with me due to my limited knowledge but I will try my best to follow any advice that anyone can offer!

Check your disk C. There my be some corrupted files on your disk.
Open Explorer, right click on drive C, Properties - Tools - Error check - Check now - Start - Schedule disk check

I went through the procedure you mentioned for my C drive, it took an hour or so, but to no avail unfortunately. I tried my Ext HDD again afterwards and the problem remains!!

If this aberrant behaviour started recently, try a system restore to a point before this happened and see whether your drives are back to normal.

Hi jumanji, thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately this is at some point in the last several months, I cannot pinpoint when exactly. Would a system restore still be possible?

Check disk normally takes some minutes. As you said that it took a long time, have a look at the log file.
Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer and open Windows logs in left pane. Double-click "Application". Look for chkdsk in the source column in the right pane for the time chkdsk was run. Double click that row to bring up details.

If the chkdsk is run on a reboot, as it would for a C drive, the results should be under a “wininit” listing in the source column, rather than under chkdsk.

Open control panel-Device manager and see if all drivers are OK. If you see a yellow mark a driver is missing.

Will you post a list of installed programs? Reason - there might be an obvious suspect in the list.

Easy way to export a list of programs:

Get GeekUninstaller and run it. Then choose File> Export. Upload the exported file and attach it to a post here please.

Note: Windows Error Reporting Service must be enabled and a reboot is required after merging the reg file.

Thanks for the list. You can zip and upload unsupported formats. I see MyWinlocker is listed. It is currently known to cause problems. See these threads:

RE: MyWinlocker removal. I've never used MyWinLocker. If you run into a problem when uninstalling first check runiing processes ans services and stop anything that you can identify as belonging to MyWinlocker then uninstall it.

Other than that use the force removal option in Geek Uninstaller.

Geek Uninstaller > Highlight MyWinLocker then from the toolbar select Action > Force Removal.

EDIT:

Note: You need a reboot to complete the uninstall. Test your external drives after the reboot.
