I am running the x86 build of Windows 7 7264. Upon multiple attempts to remove the Windows Search and Tablet PC functions from the remove Windows features screen, the login prompt repeatidly tells me that it failed to make changes and reverts back. Anyone know a fix for this? Thank you!

1 - How exactly are you attempting to remove these, through the control panel Programs and Features?

2 - Is the system a tablet?

3 - Do you have any anti-virus software running?

4 - Have you tried from Safe Mode?

I am removing it normally. Programs and Features and then add/remove windows features. I have done it with all builds of windows 7 and have only had this happen on one other build before. I am only running Microsoft Security Essentials.

The system is not a tablet-pc so thats why I am removing it.

actually uninstalling the windows search from windows 7 does remove the bar from the start menu. Ive been doing it with every build I have, and it has made a significant increase in performance by not having it.

I just tried it on my 7232 x64 workstation (I need it in my Lenovo X61t!) and it removed the tablet features no problem. Hmmm.

Have you tried booting in safe mode (set it through msconfig, reboot in safe mode, disable the tablet features, reboot again in safe mode (don't need to do anything for that), login, then use msconfig again to disable safe mode and reboot again in normal mode. I can't think of anything that could cause that except some third party service or such.

I found that if disable search in the Windows features I also cannot do a basic search in Explorer, so I end up just diabling the Windows Indexing service, as well as the Windows Media network sharing.

I tried in safemode. It actually will not let me remove anything from that section..nothing at all, including games. It will do it, says it needs to restart, then it will begin "configuring windows settings", reboot, continue to configure then say "failure to apply changes, reverting back"...Is there a specific file or service that this is based off of or something? Its getting a bit obnoxious

No, nothing at all. It has the services installed but not active unless it senses the tablet resurces and devices. There's got to be some bizarre thing going on (technical term :)). I was able to just go to the CP, check it off, re-started and it was gone, with my antivirus & malware utilities on. But as I said, I'm on 7232 x64. I had some really bad stuff happen coying across the network between two PCs with 7264 so I reverted to 7232.

Well, I pre-ordered my copy off the microsoft store..they only took one dollar out until the actual item is shipped, so, maybe I'll just go back to 7260 until then.

Search Problem...

I have a similar problem with Search...I removed the feature through the Control Panel, then decided I couldn't live without it. When I try to put it back, the process fails in the reboot step and tells me it's going to revert back to the original configuration (which means there is no Search available).

This seems to be a wider problem than we might expect this close to RTM!!!

I'm running Build 7264 x86 version on a Thinkpad T41. I wonder if repair would fix it???

So this could be another problem with 7264 - I had no problems removing it from 7232 as mentioned above. OTOH, while the tablet features are installed, the services are not running unless you have a tablet, so no real harm.

In windows 7 though, it actually does remove the search bar from the start menu..disabling the service does not do any of that. it just disables the service. All the builds I had it off on showed performance improvement.

The performance on my end with build 7264 is, with my setup, less responsive and jittery.

I haven't had any bad things happen whilst running 7264, but I'm also reverting back (to 7229). As I posted in another thread, 7264 isn't what I had expected. Re-downloading 7229 as I type this, 1.5 hours to go... I just couldn't resist, lol.

Sticking to 7229 until RTM.

Pretty much did everything I could. I wonder if Chris "workaround" for this build had something to do with this not working..

I can't remove any of this as well on 7264 =/

Why uninstall Tablet Input?
As DJG pointed out, it's not started unless it senses an input device, and it uses no discernible resources that you would save by uninstalling it.

Personally, and I know allot of others find this also, I find the Search box in the start menu to be one of the Best features to come out in W7. You can start less used programs quickly just by typing a few letters, and find other items much faster as well...I can't see why you wouldn't want it. Power users LOVE that thing, and you can simply turn off the Search function rather then uninstalling it if you feel it's slowing you down.

Blazing...
Yeah I don't see any inconveniences of having both installed, I was just pointing out that it seems to be bug or something.

I am using 7264 x64 and everything removed fine for me. I also removed a few other things as well. I left search on, but disabled the services so it would not index my drive, but it still allows me to search my computer, especially control for the hidden program. With search uninstalled, you can no longer search control panel and have to start running around for that program you can't find.

Overall I was dissapointed with 7264, even performance wise, and went back to 7260. Its the best build Ive used so far, and had no problem removing what I wanted to in it.

I'm on build 7600 and having problem uninstalling tablet PC components too

any ideas?
