Cannot Rename Hard Disks

Hi everyone. I have installed 7 on the ACHI format and have 4 hard disks. My first drive is partitioned into 2 parts, one of which contains Win 7 and the other is empty and formatted awaiting an XP installation.
I have named my 2 partitions Win 7 and Win XP and they show that in my computer. However my other 3 disks which are not partitioned and named Media, Documents and Software will only display as 'Local Disk'.
If I go into the disk management console it shows the names of my drives but it will not in 'My Computer', nomatter how many times I rename them!
I have just completely re-installed Win 7 and it's doing the same thing. All I know is that when I had my BIOS set to SATA mode and installed 7 the drive names displayed correctly.
Any ideas anyone? This has got me stumped!

Hi phil do the unpartitioned drives have drive letters?

Yeah they all have drive letters, I just cant change the names. I will attach a snapshot.

You might see if using METHOD TWO in the tutorial below may allow you to change the name for them.

for future references since this thread is already 10 months old...

i have encountered the very same problem. Windows Explorer shows only "Local Disk" and it cant be renamed but in disk management the Drive name was all OK.
what i did was:
Open disk management under computer management console right click the affected drive and choose "Change drive letter and paths", now choose "Remove" drive letters.
then wait for 30 seconds and click refresh. and then click "Add" to regain the original drive letter. now, check your drives in my computer,, you will be able to rename the affected drives this time...

Check if there is an autorun.inf file under C:\ (or whatever your HDD is). It might be interfering with the name and default icon on it, and has been most probably put there by another program. If there is one, just open it with notepad (to check if you really need it in that specific directory), and delete it or change its directory if it's useless. Now attempt to rename your HDD again. You'll most probably notice the name and default icon being able to change now.

In autorun.inf, there could be a 'label' setting for naming. When naming a drive, it always reverts to label setting in autorun.inf, (if label is used)
