Cannot renew IP address

I realize this is a Windows 7 forum, but my problem began when I attempted to install Windows 7 on a 9-year old Toshiba laptop. Not being able to find operable drivers for this no-longer-supported laptop, (despite MUCH help from Maxie) I reinstalled XP using the Toshiba Recovery and Applications Media.

Windows XP - restoring of original system software. Cannot connect to WiFi - laptop reports "Acquiring IP address" and then "Renewing your IP address" then reports limited on no connectivity.
When connected with an Ethernet cable, same messages appear. In each case, the computer reports that it could not renew the IP address. Downloaded and installed latest XP drivers from manufacturers' web sites. The Device Manager does not report any driver problems.

When I attempt to release the IP using the "ipconfig /release *Con* from the CMD line, I get the following:
No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected.
No operation can be performed on Wireless Network connection while it has its media disconnected.

I am confident the router is operating since I can connect with my iPod and surf the web, download e-mails. Appreciate any assistance you gurus can provide.

It is fine that the router works with your ipod, but the router seems to have an issue with this computer. Turning the power off to the router, waiting a few minutes and then turning the power back on - is a simple test. If that fails, you might take the laptop to a location where it can try and connect to another Wireless Access Point. (e.g. Starbucks, McDonalds, a hotel lobby....)

If things work while connected to another Wireless Access Point, reset your router at home.

I would try power cycling the router. Unplug the router and wait about a minute or so then plug it back in a let it reboot. See if that will solve the issue for ya. If not; do it again; only this time unplug the modem as well and wait about a minute then plug it back in. see if this helps ya out any. Oh yes; even though you say you can get emails etc; I would still try this as there may be something in both the router and or modem that needs to be reset that is not allowing the ip to be renewed. It also could be that something is amiss with the network drivers for xp.

Also have a pretty bad speaker setup which is a klipsch promedia 5.1 surround speaker setup with huge subwoofer and lg blu ray player/writer. Also a hp officejet pro 8600 plus wireless all in one and a logitech s7500 webcam.
The dilemma with having a 'no-longer-supported' laptop is with regards to drivers. And the features that should come with it.

If your wireless connection is encrypted or protected. Try disabling it for the meantime and test if your laptop can now connect. If it is then its possible that it does not support the wireless protection/encryption that you currently have. I had one laptop before which can only support up to WEP wireless encryption. :D

Hope this helps! ^^
