Cannot repair installation of Office 2007, even using original CD...

For the past few days I have been trying to 'repair' Office 2007 via the Control Panel; the repair gets about half way, but then the window suddenly closes. When I click on Close, I'm told that the repair will continue after a reboot, but when I reboot, nothing else happens.
Same situation when I try to repair directly from the original CD (not a copy!!).
The decision to repair came about because I cannot install Service Pack 3 for Office 2007; I get a message regarding an installation database that is possibly damaged.
Can someone offer assistance?
