Cannot run 3D games with Classic theme

Short version...games won't run without desktop compositor, hate start orb, can't use classic theme, how to remove the start "orb" and put a start button instead using standard windows 7 theme?

Long version...
64bit windows 7 home premium(same problem in Ultimate RC)

I greatly dislike the "start orb" since it overlaps windows and gets in the way trying to click things at the bottom of the screen. So I set windows to Classic theme to get rid of it.

3D Games will not run.

I turn windows 7 theme on, games run. Apparently without the desktop compositor, I cannot run 3D games. I get no video at all on them full screen or windowed. I tried classic theme again, but it will not allow the desktop compositor to be turned on. No compositor, no games.

Has anybody else had that problem?

I suppose the real question is how do I remove the start "orb" and put a classic style start button there instead with default windows 7 theme.
