Hi all,

A peculiar problem with Win7 x64 that only began occurring about 3 weeks ago. I'm using RC build 7137. Using any application, often when I try to save a file to the desktop it refuses to save with the error message: "You don't have permission to modify files in this network location. Contact the administrator per permission to make these changes."

Problem is I am using an admin account and all my permissions seem to be in order... what is this about my desktop being a network location - does this make sense to anyone? Any ideas? It's driving me nuts...

Thanks!

I have a good idea why it may be happening. So that's why I say you should simply make a new folder somewhere on the hard drive and point all apps to save to it there.

You could put a shortcut folder to it on the desktop if you want. If if you're running Rocketdock, you could put a shortcut on there instead. complete with fancy download icon.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know why this is happening though? I can't seem to get my head around it. I don't want to stop saving to my desktop!

Cheers,
G

You could probably take ownership of the folder that houses your desktop icons.

C:\Users\{your user name here}\Desktop

and/or

C:\Users\All Users\Desktop

Alternatively, you could use the takeown /F command on it from elevated command prompt.

My first suggestion is probably the much better way, though.

No luck

Hey,

Tried taking ownerships of my desktop and Users directory also but same thing occurs. My situation differs from most permissions related saving problems because Windows 7 sees my desktop as a "network location" and I have no idea why! Oh well, I'll put up with it until my next reinstall. thanks for the help :-)
