Hi,

I'm getting no sound from my headphones.

Brand new head phones plugged into front panel jack. Its set as default communication device and works fine with skype etc...

I want to watch movies with the audio going through my headphones but the sound still comes out of the laptops speakers.

I tried to set the headphones to Default playback device but it won't allow it.

Can anyone help pleaseeeee..... it driving me nuts!

Hi there!
I've got exactly the same problem. It is so frustrating. Did you ever figure it out!?
I'm just stuck on 'default communications device'.
I noticed that in the volume mixer it shows what applications are operating through which device...
Annoying.

I had to set the playback device for each programe!!! (very annoying) i went through the options in windows media player and VLC player and set the headphones to default playback device. Its a solution if you just need them for watching films or music.
Hope this helps

Has anybody discovered a solution to this? I'm having the same problem, I can't make my headphones the default device. I can still hear out of them when the speakers and dual headphones are set as the default, but there's a noticeable drop in sound quality and I bought an expensive pair of headphones for a reason. It's really starting to get on my nerves.

Yes, I did. and moreover both laptop and external speakers work when you test them. Now I set external speaker as default for my audio player, but do you know if I can do the same for my Internet browser and VLC?

It works! I deleted a sound driver, namely IDT. go to your control panel, device manager and check the sound, video and game controllers tab - youll see it in there if you have it. if you do you can remove it there and reboot. It will install again when you open Windows put I guess it's another version as everything works!

HP 615 playback default still screwed after fix

I have tried the fix where you delete old IDT drivers, then let W7 reinstall them. On re-boot and when new drivers installed it worked fine, but on the next re-boot it was stuck again. Can't set default, and output goes to headphones only when the application is able to demand it. I tried this three times. Each time it fixed it then screwed on re-boot. Any ideas anyone? HP says re-build the computer from scratch. Great!:(

probably the driver.. uninstall the old sound driver and then download the latest one.. In case the driver only available for vista and not windows seven. run the driver in compatibility mode :)

Default sound playback on HP 615 (IDT)

Thanks for looking. I had already loaded the driver from IDT web site, and also let W7 find one. In the end I sort of worked out a solution, which was to disable in Msconf in both the service and startup task supplied by IDT. This allows Windows to do the management and works OK now. My guess is that with both IDT and W7 simultaneously providing facilities to set defaults in control panel, neither of them won. Chances are one of the Windows updates didn't work properly.
I hope a more elegant solution will emerge later!

simple advice, any update should be set to manual so that you know what happen and make sure to create restore point or better yet an image backup so you can revert the updates installed if anything goes wrong:)

I've been battling with this issue, it was very annoying. I followed this advice and removed IDT PC Audio from startup in msconfig and set the Audio Service to manual. So far this seems to have fixed it (also using the Windows provided driver instead of Dell's driver). I'll reply if further problems crop up.

Hey guys, I've been battling this stupid problem for a few weeks now and have been searching the web for days for an answer. I did what the last two posters said to do and I went to msconfig and disabled those two processes. However when I restart the pc it simply reinstalls the IDT codec instead of a default windows one. Any help would be greatly appreciated this stupid thing is buggin me a lot. Oh yeah and also for some reason even after I disabled the
Audio Service in msconfig and rebooted the com, when i open msconfig it still says it's running. 0.o

I have almost the same problem. With me, my headphones work with pretty much everything, until I start up Skype. Then the sound goes through the speakers, and even when I close Skype I still have to reboot the computer to get my sound to go through my headphones again. I looked in my sound settings, and found that my regular speakers are the default communication speakers. I need to know how to set it up so that my headphones default for everything, but when I unplug them, my regular speakers still work.

I got it to work

so pretty much i took logic and threw it out the window.... go to playback devices and disable your headset by right-clicking. Now all sound should go through your headset. Moral of the day is **** Logic :)

ROFL! chris1and2, I love you. I would have NEVER thought of that on my own. Reinstalling drivers was the first thing I did, and after messing around with other audio settings and internal workings of my computer I decided to google, and you are my savior. Thanks! You're pretty damn amazing
