Hey guys I just went a created an account on here because I have searched for hours and haven't found anything. And everytime it's something to do with people who have exceeded the maximum amount of partitions they can have which is 4. The problem is not this, I have no partitions on the selected drive AT ALL. I have about 105GB free of space and when I try to partition 25GB it says there isn't enough space available when there is! For some reason though I can get up to like 18GB and it works but if I go over that it just says no space?

I really do hope someone can solve this problem asap. This drive is not my system drive, it's an extra I have in my pc and I run my OS on an SSD and have tried using 3rd party programs and have had no luck.

Thank you for reading and hopefully I could get some much needed help.

No, I have never had errors or the drive breaking and yesterday I did run tests to see if the drive was working okay and it was. I can copy over sata just fine, it's like it can get so far and then just stops working. I tried doing that resize again with the program got up to 14GB then it crashed again with the same error code.

Run Use WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD RE2 in case of western digital disk

Partition Wizard says DISK I/O error. Prove drive is physically fine. I think it has bad sectors and/or is dying!

Yes I believe you are correct on that! I remember when trying the other software yesterday it said something about bad sectors, which is not so good :( I suppose the only other option would be to buy a new hard disk haha. I'll get that software but should I do a surface check with the software you recommended to me? That checks over the sectors correct? Well I'll give it a shot.

Hello Zakaria again.

Once I faced a similar problem. The problem was basically due to the physical presence of files spread all over the disk. What I did was download this simple and easy to use defragger: Disk Defrag - Best Free Defrag Software For Your Hard Drive and then using the "Defrag and optimize" option in the tool (this tool is NOT at all crap, so please don't point fingers at me). That option consolidates all data on one side of the disk and free space on the other side.

After doing this, I was able successfully partiton the drive according to my needs.

You could atleast try doing this. Nothing will harm.

With the software I told you ... do quick test first. After that extended test.
If disk is faulty.... make backup as soon as possible of important data! Throw it away and buy a new disk.

Don't resize or shrink the partition now. First save the data!

Run the Extended test to get a definitive reading.

You should NOT use Partition Wizard Home version to resize as anyone who's been here for very long should know. It risks data loss and also faces the same problem where System files are running and cannot be moved.

The only methods we know which do not cause data loss during Resizing are Disk Mgmt and Partition Wizard bootable CD. Try that now.

And post us a proper full size shot of disk management showing everything, with no error messages covering anything up. Post it by using the paperclip above in your reply.

I backup Greg`s statement of making and using the Partition Wizard boot cd, it`s safer and never fails.
