Canon i865 and Win 7

I have a Canon i865 attached to an XP pc, and trying to access the printer over the network

In Vista x64 I did this:
"Go to Control Panel. Choose printers. Then choose Add Printer.

Choose Add a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the drop down box is Local Port. Leave it default. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the \\computer name\printer name "

The above installed the printer no problem


In Windows 7 x64 it pops up with a 'install driver' window, yet my printer is not in the list.

How can I install the printer? Can I get the driver from Vista somehow? Canon don't have a Vista x64 driver

lol fail. I was looking under the Brother driver section instead of Canon

Canon i865 driver is in Win 7. Thread closed (except for a gentle mocking perhaps )

As I was having the same problem (couldn't locate the driver) I contacted Canon customer support (Netherlands) who informed that there is no network driver for the i865. They suggested that I contact Microsoft.

However, as it appears you have been able to get this working, I wonder what you have done to make it so.

For what it's worth: I have my i865 connected to an XP Pro machine, which shares it correctly to other XP boxes. I don't have Vista, but I try to use the shared printer from my new Windows 7 Home Premium laptop.

Just to let anyone else who struggles with this problem know: I am now able to print from my Windows 7 system to my i865 which is hooked up to an XP Pro box. I don't use the sharing function, but have installed the Windows LPD service. Next, I configured a local LPR printer on my Windows 7 system and selected the i865 driver that is available after clicking Windows Update. Make sure to use as queue name on the LPR side the printer name (not the share name) on the LPD side. This name can't contain spaces, it seems.

The only drawback I have seen so far is that the Status Monitor doesn't seem to be working.

At some stage a box pops up asking you to select the driver from the list, and the Canon i860 is listed as the driver comes with Vista/7

Thanks so much for your idea of installing as a local printer on a port, I had talked to microsoft, hp, and cannon, and none of them could get it to work.
I did what you said and in less than 3 minutes it was up and running.

Cool

These days the Canon i86x drivers aren't listed by default. You have to click the 'Get drivers online' button or whatever.

It will go away for 5 minutes and come back with a huge list of drivers, including the i860/865
