I just bought a brand new older model Canon ip4300 printer on eBay to replace my even older broken ip5000 and haven't installed it yet. I went ahead and uninstalled the drivers for the ip5000.

Going to Canon's website the driver listed is dated 11/01/2006 and I suspect (but not positive) is the same driver on the software disk that came with the printer.

Which is the preferred way to install the drivers for the new ip4300 use the website drivers/software disk or let Windows 7 detect the drivers?

Usually getting the driver from the website is the best option. However, if the website driver is from 2006 (pre Windows 7) you will probably be better off letting Windows 7 install it's own driver, if it can.

Assuming you were looking at the Canon US site, it looks like they didn't change the dates for any of the drivers. Reason for saying that is if you go to canon.ca,

Drivers & Software - Support & Drivers - Canon Canada Inc.

all the drivers are dated 12/03/2010, and with the exception of not having "us" in the file names, the rest of the file names are the same on .ca as .com.

Yeah you're right the US and Canadian drivers are the same even though one is dated 2006 and the other 2010.

So since these drivers are Windows 7 compatible I'm assuming I should use them?

If I use the Canon website drivers how do you keep Windows 7 from automatically installing them when I connect the printer?

Been a while since my last Canon printer, but aren't you supposed to start the driver install before connecting the printer? If not I would just let Windows detected and install its own driver, then run the Canon driver after and it will over-write the Windows driver.

I agree with Stormy13. Install the driver first, then connect your printer.
