Can't access shared resource on virtual machine from host

Hi,

First the setup:

Windows 7 Ulitimate 32 bit host system.
Windows XP Professional SP2 running in a virtual machine.
Both "computers" are on the same network and can ping each other.
Both "computers" are in the same workgroup.
Both "computers" have the Windows Firewall disabled.
The XP machine can access the Windows 7 shares (after providing the user ID and password of an admin user on the Windows 7 box.)

Now the problem:

The Windows 7 machine sees the XP machine in Explorer, but prompts
for user ID and password when I try to open it. Typing in MACHINE\USER and PASSWORD fails and it prompts me to log in again. (MACHINE = Name of the XP machine, USER = User ID of an administrator of the XP machine, and PASSWORD = that user's correct password.)

Is there a service on the XP box that needs to be running other than the Server service (which is running)? What else could be the problem? I really need it to work this way (mounting the .vhd and accessing it directly is not an option as I need to use the XP machine as a test machine.)

Hello UberSmart, welcome to the Seven forums.

I guess you are not talking about Windows XP Mode because it's an XP SP 3, not SP 2 as your vm. You did not tell on which virtualization application your XP vm is running? If Virtual PC, have you installed and enabled integration features? Or Guest Additions in VirtualBox, or VMware Tools if running on VMware?

Accessing XP vm shares in a Virtual PC vm is discussed here: http://www.sevenforums.com/virtualization/127889-xp-mode-sharing-files-guest-machine.html

Hi Kari,

Thanks for the link. I actually had that thread open in another window, but I skipped over it when I saw that it was a solution for simple file sharing. Bottom line is that I went ahead and followed the directions and it led me to the problem and a solution. Thanks! :D

For anyone reading this thread, the problem was that file sharing was disabled (despite the service running and ports open). Attempting to share a folder told me file sharing needed to be enabled and gave me a link to do so.
