I am having trouble setting a static ip for my computer (ipv4). After I enter all the values, I get this error...

error-1.jpg

The IP that I want to use is not being used. Any idea how to fix this?

Just reading that message alone suggests that your wireless adapter is using the IP address. When attempting to configure your static IP manually, which device are you clicking on in the Network Connections screen?
If you have a wireless card installed then chances are you will have two entries here; one for the wireless card and one for the onboard network socket which in your case is most likely not in use but will still appear as a device.

Follow the above advice though and post the ipconfig details for further analysis.

If your wireless card was working at one time and the router assigned an IP to it then the router would have a memory of this, this is where Windows is getting it's information from. Resetting the router would clear the memory in that case.

If you want to use DHCP plus a static IP, then the static IP you use needs to be outside the range of IP addresses that the router uses for DHCP. For instance the range on my DHCP is 192.168.0.100-192.168.0.199 so a static IP would need to be either above or below 100 and 199.

You might be better off going into the router's set up page at "192.168.1.1" and switch over from DHCP to static IP's. You should be able to assign IP's from there or Windows.

Have you turned on the wifi? If it is a laptop there is a usual key combo to enable it.

To Zig: He said he's connecting through ethernet, so it's a good job the wifi is disconnected in this case ;)

Chev: That's assuming he has a specific router. Some Belkins are 192.128.2.1; some Netgears 0.1 and some Linksys 1.1; at least the models I've had of each.

I'm not assuming anything because his ipconfig showed the default gateway as 192.168.1.1, pretty straight forward in this case. :)
