Ok the problem iam having is i am not really sure how the sata drives work, i know ide's but sata's i dont quite understand. my system is home built and i just added 2 more harddrives for a total of 4 and they are as follows: WD320Gig IDE this HDD has the operating system on it. WD320Gig SATA, this drive holds my backed up programs. WD160Gig SATA, this one holds my Documents. WD 80Gig SATA this one holds music and movies. the problem iam having is when the comp boots up i have to keep changing the boot selector to boot from the WD320 "IDE" drive all the time otherwise the comp does not boot up. i tried to change the settings in the bios but it doenst work for me, i am assuming i am doing something wrong can somebody point me in the right direction. Thanks In Advance.

Welcome toughguy5 :)

I think there you will have to set the jumpers for both IDE Drives. Set the Jumper (Pins) to Master on WD320GB (Operating System) IDE than set the jumper on 2nd WD320GB IDE to Slave. Both SATA HDD's would not have any jumpers settings so just plug them in. From Bio's try Reset to Defaults and restart computer and see if this works. Im not sure about the exact settings either coz i have not used several drives at same time.

Just a thought, if you have enough space to back up you data and free up a SATA drive you could copy / clone your C drive onto a SATA disc 80 gig should be plenty and it will also sort your start up problems

When you get to here in the bios,

bootorder.PNG

does it open a new screen that allows you to choose which hard drive to set as the boot drive?

Also for the boot order if you haven't try setting it as follows,

1. Hard Disk
2. CDROM
3. Disabled (assuming you don't have a floppy drive)

ok i just trie this one:
Get your Vista installation DVD and pop it into your drive.
- Then restart your computer.
- Press a key when you are prompted.
- Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click Next
- Click Repair your computer
- Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next
- In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt
- Type bootrec /rebuildbcd and then press ENTER
• If Bootrec runs successfully, it will present you with the installation path of a Windows directory. To add the entry to the BCD store, type Yes . A confirmation message appears that indicates the entry was added successfully.
• If Bootrec cannot locate any missing Windows installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order shown below: (Remember to press ENTER after each command)
bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup= when i get here it says System cannot find file
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
bootrec /rebuildbcd
- Restart the computer.

it found 0 windows installation, i also just found out where the bootmgr file is located on my M drive which is a sata drive.

but i can boot up to 7 with my windows 7 cd in the drive!!!!!!!!!!!???

I have never had this problem in my life with computers!!!?!?!?!?!

Post a snip of your Disk Mangement, make sure it shows the 'Active, System, Boot,...' information.

Sounds like Win7 put the boot files on a different HDD. As pooch mentioned, Startup Repair should fix it.

It's a good practice to unplug all other drives except the one your installing to when installing the OS.

Also agree that you should put the OS on a SATA drive.

You don't need RAID.

The 100 MB partition is the 'System Reserved' with the boot files. Look for this partition in your Disk Management.
Start button > right click 'Computer' > Manage > when the window opens click 'Disk Management'.

Win7 installer will look for a partition marked 'Active' or the drive in Port0.

Edit:
Try Startup Repair from the Win7 installer disk/USB memory stick.
Follow the tutorial pooch posted.

To be sure the boot files get in the right drive, unplug all other HDDs, then run Startup Repair three seperate times with re-boots between each run.
