Can't boot my PC!

I am running Win 7rc on a Gigabyte ex58 mobo. I have my TV connected as a 2nd monitor so I use a wireless keyboard/mouse combo from my recliner. I also have a wireless mouse on my desk and a wired keyboard there. None seem to interfere with each other.
I hit some button on my programmable wireless keyboard and the PC locked up, so I had to reboot from the power switch. When it rebooted, it posted, showed BIOS, then gave me a message:
"The last attempt to resume the system from its previous location failed. Attempt to resume again? (Use the arrow keys to highlight your choice.)
Continue with system resume
Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu
ENTER=choose"
I've never seen this message before on any other OS, but that doesn't really matter. My problem is I have no keyboard control at this point so I cannot make a selection. I cannot proceed from this point, so I can't do anything with my PC. I have keyboard control at the point BIOS is available, so I can make changes there. But after BIOS is past, no keyboard. So while in BIOS, I tried resetting defaults. That did nothing.
I also tried telling BIOS to boot from CD so I could try repairing the OS, but that doesn't work either. When it gets to the point where it askes to hit any key to boot from CD, it doesn't accept keystrokes again, so it goes back the the system resume screen. So I can't even format the HDD because of this. I don't see any way to recover from this at all.
I have also tried plugging in just one of the 2 keyboards at a time and booting with no keybaord, then with each one seperately.
Can anyone help with this? It seems hopeless.

To access the BIOS options, you'll need to have a PS/2 mouse installed.

Then I would unplug all other unnecessary USB devices and/or any other peripheral.

Now try booting, hit the F8 key until you see the screen with options like Repair My computer Safe Mode, Safe Mode w Networking, etc.

Choose Repair my computer an you will now get a screen where you can choose a restore point to go back to.

I don't think you read my post.

I am not trying to do anything in BIOS.

This is a home built PC. There are no options like you stated on boot. I explained everything that comes up.

The action I need to take requires a keyboard strike, not mouse.

Totally my mistake, I meant PS/2 keyboard.

Hi Madwand, welcome to the forums.

Normally, wireless periferals have a signal connect/reset button on the periferal (keyboard/mouse) and the reciever. You could try resetting the signal and see if that helps get your keyboard back online.

Hope this helps :)

I've tried that. But I am not even trying to use the wireless peripherals, I have unplugged all USB devices from the PC except for my wired keyboard that has always worked before.

I don't have a serial keyboard to use, if that would help. I had one but threw it away last week...can you even buy one nowadays?

have you tried resetting the BIOS manually. There will be a jumper on your mobo. find it and switch it over. reboot the pc. nothing will seem to happen. unplug the power again, reset the jumper and turn it on again. this should work.
you can also remove the cmos battery for a few seconds and try again.
make sure you disconect your pc from the power and earth yourself before playing around in there

Enable USB in the BIOS
USB is often disabled by Default in the BIOS. To enable USB in the BIOS one or more of the following statements must be true.

  • USB Keyboard - DOS or Enabled (Even if you have NO USB Keyboard)
  • Legacy USB Support - Enabled
Basically look for any settings that say Keyboard in it too, or something like USB DOS support. Enabled it/them.

If enabling that doesn't help (it should),

most motherboards have a jumper to reset BIOS. Might try toggling that to on and back to normal. If you can't locate which one it is, remove the round battery on the motherboard by hand by pushing the clip that holds it in place, easily.

Wait a minute or less and place it back in. See how it goes now

If that doesn't work, then your best bet is to find a PS/2 keyboard somehow. Here's one:

Newegg.com - Logitech 967973-0403 Black 104 Normal Keys PS/2 Standard Deluxe 250 Desktop - Keyboards

Edit: lol tw33k, great minds think alike.

I hadn't thought to reset the BIOS. Mainly because I don't have a clue why I should. And for the life of me, I can't remember seeing anything about keyboards in there anyway. I am at work and will look when I get home.

There's a chance the IT guy here at work can get his hands on a serial keyboard for me to borrow too.

Madwand,

As post previously my several members, you should see and entry for Legacy USB support. This is what you want to enable.

Your computer must be quiet old if you have a serial port.

torrentg,

Sorry, I should have looked over the previous postings more clearly,. I now see that you mentioned the exact same thing.

Yep, it's Legacy USB setting. When he gets home and looks in the BIOS, this is going to be disabled. And when he enables it, all will work fine and then he could choose on that screen that pops up.

It's like setting up a dual boot, and realizing your keyboard doesn't work the first time you get the boot choice screen.

So, good luck Madwand. Tell us how it goes.

No, it's pretty much a super computer (I7)...other people have been using serial interchangeably with PS/2 and I just continued it. I meant PS/2.

You could create a bootable install of 7 on a flashdrive then set your BIOS to boot from a USB HDD. It won't prompt you to press a key to boot from that like it would with a disk...it just does it automatically.

Keep in mind that if you do this you will have to disconnect any other USB storage device or it won't work.

System resume was a feature in Vista, if your computer locked up for some reason it would save the data that you were working on for a system resume. From your OP it sounds like the PC didn't recognize the command of the custom key function on your keyboard and it locked. Trying to resume wouldn't work because the resume would see the keyboard as not working. I would try unplugging the power from the pc for 10 minutes so the system resume clears itself. Then plug your usb keyboard/mouse reader into a different port. If something happened on like an IRQ line then it would need to be moved. Hope this helps, just some added info from personal experiences. Also, I beleive a wired USB keyboard would suffice as well as a ps/2.

Thanks,
Jverse

Well, that explains what the system resume was, that's good to know. I have tried killing the power to it, that didn't help. Maybe I didn't do it long enough. I have tried the wired USB keyboard on different USB posrts, that didn't work either.

I have a PS/2 keyboard I got from work, I will try that when I get home.

I take it from your explanation that I should NOT select the resume since all it's trying to do is resume a mistake.

That is correct, it wouldn't resume into that state anyway. But, I hope this helps. Goodluck to ya.
