Can't change my IP address...

Hey guys, you know when you go to Google and type in "what is my ip", it will show you your IP address. Yeah, but it shows mine, and it's called "Public IP Address."

For example, lets say I go to google.com and type in "what is my ip"...

Then this shows up...

Your public IP address is 24.xxx.xxx.xx

Yeah, so I contacted my ISP, teksavvy, about that but then they told me to take out that white big cable, from behind the modem and leave it for 10 minutes but it doesn't work after reconnect it after 10 minutes.

And when I re-called them about that, they said the same thing, to disconnect that cable for 10 minutes and connect it again, but then I said "Will that change my Public IP address or what"? then they are like "I don't know what you mean by that" Then after that. they are like, if you can change the IP address, then that is the only way you can change it. NO OTHER WAY!!!

Please help me guys, so can I actually change my public IP address? I know I can change my other "192.168.x.x" ip address in my router...

Your ip address that is seen from the internet is the ip address assigned by your ISP, and that address is only your router. The only time the address of your computer is used on the internet is if you make a point-to-point connection with an instant message program, a peer-to-peer communications program, for example Skype, depending on how the connection is made, then your IP address is also available to the computer with which yours is communicating.
Your ISP can change the address of your router at any time.
The important thing to realize is that you do not own your IP address, your ISP or service provider does. All public information about that IP address will in all likelihood refer only to them.

Sorry, I don't understand which ip address you are trying to change. The router or your computer?
You should contact your ISP about getting a static ip address. ISP's nearly always charge extra each month for a static address.
A static ip would enable you to access your computer remotely without going through a paid server. For example to access a home video surveillance system.

Any particular reason for wanting to change it?

Teksavvy cable is wholesale Rogers cable, and I can tell you from personal experience with both (currently with Teksavvy) that the IP might as well be static for the amount that it changes seeing as it is actually dynamic. Sometimes it can take up to 24 hours or more (10 minutes is nowhere near long enough) with the cable disconnected from the modem to get a new IP assigned. I know in the past I went 4 or 5 days with no connection and when I got back online I still had the same IP from before.

I like Stormy have the same question. Why do you want to change your IP address? What are you trying to do that you need to change the IP address that Google indicates on line? Knowing why could help us help you.

The address that gets returned from the query is the 194.223.19.212. That's the address assigned to you by your ISP. The addresses on the downstream (left) side of the modem are invisible to the internet. Your ISP probably manages your modem and I think they can see up to the router, but they definitely can't see past your router.

By the way: ISP = Internet Service Provider. You likely get assigned a dynamic IP address, which is why they told you to disconnect the cable. When you reconnect you may get a different address. But that's not guaranteed. Depends on their network map/setup/config.

I get a dynamic address from my ISP, yet it acts like it's static; it hasn't changed in years. Of course my modem is on 99.99% of the time. The only opportunity for it to change is after it's been off/disconnected. The downtime is just too short for it to happen (at least by the way my ISP manages it).

Why do you want to change your public IP address?
It is important to understand that the public IP address doesn't belong to you. It isn't yours to change. The IP address belongs to your ISP and is leased to you for the purposes of connecting to the Internet. What that address will be and how or if it can be changed is up to your ISP.

A common reason people want to change their public IP is to circumvent file hoster waiting time.

Lets say you wanted to download the latest blockbuster movie from a filehost site (possible copyright issues here). The large file might be split into multiple rars. Part #1 downloads OK, but when you go for part #2 you get the message 'limit of 1 file per 2hrs - get a premium account for unlimited downloads' or whatever (its how they make their $$$). They know its you because they know your IP. Solution - reboot your router and your ISP will reallocate a different IP, so the filehoster thinks you are a different person.

BTW I'm not suggesting the OP is an illegal movie downloader (or condoning such activity), although his ISP's reply re: rebooting or reconnecting to get a different dynamic IP was correct.
