Can't change Windows Update setting

I just did a clean installation of Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit on my Fujitsu Lifebook U820. I am signed on with an account that has administrative permissions, but when I go to Windows Update and try to change the settings, the dialog tells me "Some settings are managed by your system administrator." As such it will not let me change how important updates are done and is stuck on "Never Check for updates (not recommended)". I am the only user of this laptop, at my home and it is not part of a network. Could I have selected an incorrect option during my Win 7 installation? How do I change this as I want Windows 7 to update automatically? I've spent hours trying to solve this.

Try enabling the built in admin account and changing your account to admin or making the change. It might not work since it sounds like you are not on an admin account but it's worth a try.

If this IS a clean istall....is it on a network? Does anyone else have access to the machine? these are questions you need to consider.

Go to user accounts and make sure you can edit other accounts if this does not work, maybe it's another problem.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I already tried that and it did not work. Even the "hidden" Admin account could not change the Windows Update settings.

2.Reset Security settings by using "MS Fix it" How do I restore security settings to the default settings?

3.Use another tool for reset security settings Rizone Security Restore 0.2.2.228 | Rizone Technologies +restart

Thanks for the suggestions but none of these worked (I did not try the MS Fix It as it does not work with Win7).

The computer was or is part of a domain, you need to remove it from the domain. You can edit the local security policy directly. Try the following link How do I restore security settings to the default settings?

Besides it would be caused also by any 3p security software.If reset security settings manually will not solve problem then I strong recommend uninstall all 3p security software.

@ccatlett1984 - I tried running the command for Vista "secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose". It ran successfully, but did not change anything. The existing Win7 user accounts were still there and I still cannot change the Windows Update settings. How would my laptop have become part of a domain? It is used stand-alone and at home. Are there any questions I could have answered during the Win7 installation that affected this? Even so, I should still be able to change Update settings.

As I said in my previos post - uninstall all 3p security software:firewall,antivirus,antimalware.Maybe do you have NIS?

@Flavius - I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials (no other firewall, antivirus, etc.)

I "solved" this by reinstalling Windows 7. Even Microsoft Tech Support for Windows Update could not figure out how to fix this.

Right click and select properties. Can you change your security?

You should consider having a second administrator account- that way if you loose a password you will still have access to your computer. Just a warning!

I know this is about a year too late but I was having the same problem and nearly tearing my hair out ha. Finally worked it out so, just in case someone using Windows 7 is looking to solve this problem:

Open Local Group Policy Editor:
- Start Menu
- Type 'gpedit.msc' in search bar
In Left Pane of LGP Editor
- user configuration
- administrative templates
- windows components
- windows updates
In Right Pane
- right click 'Remove access to use all windows update features'
- Edit
- Enable
- Ok

I have same problem, installed Win7HP and it won't let me change the Windows Update settings....

So, is my only solution to reinstall Win7 again?

Seems like Win7 should allow me to change settings somehow without reinstalling entire OS again.....

Forgot to mention in my post above that I tried the method in the link you post and it did not help....

Like cybernevets above, I just bit the bullet and reinstalled Win7 again and made sure to select the right option for updates....
