Maybe there is some delay in the system (i.e. ARP table updates) and your machine is trying to connect before the network has stabilised.

Have you checked the various network settings for typos?

Next time you can't connect:

  • Open the "Command Prompt"
  • Can you "ping" your server's IP address? (without the quotes).
  • Does you machine's IP address appear if you execute "arp -a" (without the quotes)?
  • Are the settings correct, if you execute "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes)?

Hello, phazerh

Can you give a little more information about this. When you say you are trying to connect to a server, how are you trying to connect? Can you get a picture of the error.

Please also do the ipconfig as Lehnerus2000 has suggested.

Sometimes "Network Discovery" is a bit tardy.

Does your server have a static IP address?
Does your client (PC) have a static IP address?

Can you "manually" connect to your server?

Next time you can't connect:
Open the "Run" box (or use the "Address Bar" in Windows Explorer)
Type:
\\"Your Server Name" (without the quotes e.g. \\orac)
OR
\\"Your Server IP Address" (without the quotes e.g. \\192.168.1.1)
Press the "Enter" key.

Can you connect?

The message says

Windows services are very different from windows servers. The service you're having problems with isn't network related. You'll have more luck posting on the 'General Discussion' board with a topic like 'user profile service won't start.'
