Cant connect wireless suddenly - VAN.dll and iphlpap.dll error

Hi there guys...

Right, just a few days ago without making any changes, I can no longer detect the wireless connection in my house (which is definitely still working as it comes up on my phone).

When I try to open up the wireless connection manager (sorry if thats the wrong name), I get one of these messages:

(1) iphlpapi.dll is missing or corrupt (also the version i have seems to be a different size than I believe should be the case from google)

(2) van.dll is not working (or maybe this was also missing or corrupt)

(3) Xwizard.exe isnt working

When I tried to replace van.dll, i got a message saying that trustedinstaller had to give me permission to replace this file.

Could this be a virus? Or am i just being dumb... Ive got kaspersky and done a scan, and nothing came up...but databases are out of date.

And I've run (i think its called) computercleaner to check the registry for errors, but still not helping.

Any ideas?

I'd be very careful about replacing or deleting system files - if you google the two .dll names there are tons of replies how to fix them however I would be more inclined to run a spyware/ malware program e.g. Malwarebytes (as you say you've already run your AV program) before deciding these files are actually missing. I don't want to give you the wrong advice that is why I suggested you look at what others have done in this situation.

I did that, and it did find something and removed it (in an unrelated file location)...but I still had the same problem.

I then decided to try to remove van.dll (using the malwarebytes additional programme to remove such things)... it now looks like it is gone when i view through the malwarebytes additional programme, but is still there when i just use document viewer! Confused!

Maybe just a hard-disk wipe and start again?

Do you have any other PC or laptop other than your phone that you could use to see if it can see your wireless. The most likely thing is somehow the one that is giving problems has got corrupted in some way (that's why I suggested the MB). I expect if you can get another PC or borrow one it will work fine and the problem will be confined to the original. Wiping your harddisk and starting over sounds a bit drastic and should only be a last resort.

I'll take my work laptop home tonight to see if it can spot the network. If yes, then I'm assuming something else wrong with the laptop.

Is there anyway to get the latest virus signature file for kaspersky? So that I can bolt it into the one on my laptop? Otherwise it could be a recent threat... I had issue to so had to reinstall...and I think signature could be quite old...

Or is there any other freeware virus software that I can download that will have up-to-date signature included?

Hi again, Check if your work laptop sees and can connect to your home network and the internet - if it works then clearly the problem is in the original system.

On the assumption it is a legit copy of Kaspersky (?) you should be able to download the latest from their website. I personally have never paid for a AV program in my life and currently use MS Security Essentials which is free provided you have a legit copy of Win7 or XP (?) - you can download from here.....

If you can't get this to work there is a free version of AVG antivirus that works fine.

Indeed, hi again...and ongoing thanks.

I havent got a legit copy of Kasperski - but I do have a Windows 7 legit copy (came with laptop but dont have disks annoyingly)... problem will be cant download the file on the laptop (since not connected)...

I've taken avg home and will see what it finds...

Lets take a step back - the problem is wireless, right ? Have you connected the home laptop with an ethernet cable and got it to connect to your network and internet ? If that works, and you know your wireless is transmitting from the router because your phone can see it, so the problem has to be associated with the wireless reception of your laptop. Go into network connections from the control panel and look at the properties of the network (wireless) card - make sure everything is correct e.g. IPv4 enabled (box ticked), DHCP enabled (or fixed IP if you use that). If all looks correct and still doesn't work would you know how to disable and re-enable the wireless card ? - by doing this it should sort anything wrong with it. Failing that you can uninstall it, reboot and it will re-install when it is detected by Windows. You can also verify that it is the wireless in the home laptop that is the problem if your work laptop sees and can connect to your home network and get on tinternet.

Hi there mate...sorry I couldnt answer last night, but i did see the post.

It was an obvious suggestion, but it didnt work in the end. Other laptop could connect and I couldnt use half the buttons in the network sharing centre (or whatever its called)..

In the end, I replaced the van.dll and iphlpap.dll files with ones i found on this website (Windows 7 64bit Untimate - IPHLPAPI.DLL download cant remember which, but not all could be overwritten, but the ones I did manage to do, did the trick (and I noticed that the ones that i could replace were different file sizes compared to the ones I downloaded, whereas those I couldnt replace were actually the same size)...

I got the ones both for ...\system32\... and ...\syswow64\...

Anyway, somehow it works now..!

OK, glad you finally got it working although these kind of problems make you think.... " how did it happen in the first place" - and, you really don't know what fixed it.....
