cant create new partion? error?

hello

im trying to create a new partition on my c drive to install xp for dual booting,however this message appears and im not sure what it means. im trying to partion the 30gb unallocated space

oh, you already have 4 partitions in the partition table. You can not have more than 4 partitions on a basic disk (unless you convert one of them to extended)

you will need to edit that.

what do you mean? cant i have more than 4, the others came with my computer.

I mean that a hard disk with MBR structure cannot have more than 4 partitions, unless you convert one of the existing partitions into an extended one. Then you can make some logical partitions within the extended partition.

lol im confused, so what do you suggest i do?

i just want to add another partition for xp

if you're confused, then you should probably not be attempting to do what I say.

Why don't you just install Microsoft Virtual PC and XP mode? Then you can use XP within Windows 7.

yes i tried that but i want to use this video capaturing software and its not very smooth on xp mode

id like a dedicated xp operating system

see if it lets you convert the c: partition into extended or logical.
