Can't delete Icon on desktop

Doing a DEL *.tor should have only deleted files with ".tor" not everything.

What may also be going wrong for you is you shouldn't save everything to the Desktop. Save it in your Documents. Create a folder called Torrents and save Torrents stuff there. That way if you need to do something to your torrents only they are all in one place and it does not affect other things.

They are gone. You will need to run an undelete program to bring them back. Try Recuva works well.

Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

Del in Cmd

You can usually delete these things via DOS.

Folder - Delete from Command Prompt

  1. Call up a command prompt.
  2. Use the cd command to navigate to the parent folder containing the rogue folder (so, for example, cd X:\Users\<account>\Rouge\Desktop).
  3. Use dir to produce a listing of what's there - it should include the rogue folder in the list.
  4. Use rmdir to delete the offending item (e.g. rmdir rogue).
  5. Use dir again to check that the rogue folder is no longer in the list.
  6. Exit the command prompt and check that the rogue folder has gone.
  7. :) (hopefully)

I have had similar issue (0 bytes file, blank icon on Destop), nothing worked to remove it, I even tried this "solution":

1. Right click the icon you want to get rid of and press "cut".

2. Then hit Ctrl+SHFT+ESC(opens up taskmgr)

3. Navigate to the "processes" tab and 'end' the process "explorer.exe".

4. Now go the the "applications" tab of taskmgr.

5. Click "new task" - type "explorer.exe" - then hit ok.

6. Voilà!
Your desktop should be back to normal!

no luck for me!

BUT then I did totally stupid thing and it worked: CUT stubborn file from Destop and PASTE to some other location (I did to D:\) and from there you can simply delete it like any other file. SUCCESS. :)

Cheers,
Miki

I have this same problem just after a fresh format!
I finally get my video card and sound card working again and now I've got this, at least it's no where near as bad.

Every new shortcut that a program makes on my desktop, I try to delete it and get an error saying the item is no longer located in D:\Users\[Username]\Desktop and to find it.
I checked that folder and there is nothing in their. I tried CCCleaner and all these tips and restarting and it didn't help. The icons are for programs I have installed on my computer.

I changed my Users directory after the format, from C: to D: by using the guide on here were you change the directory paths in regedit. But I made a new account and deleted the old one. Could this be causing the problem?

I can't rename them or do anything to them, they just sit their.

EDIT: I can hide them which solves the problem basically but I'd prefer to have these deleted off my desktop not hidden on it.

The file could not be found - Deleting a shortcut on Desktop

I had a shortcut on my Desktop which was a white shortcut 341 kb(It was originally a picture) but with nothing showing up on properties, security, etc... It was originally a .jpg file.

For days I was trying to get rid of that damn thing and it wouldn't delete it at all. Every time I tried to delete it I was getting a message saying: This file could not be found and it isn't on your system... I tried CMD, prompts and in every Forum I followed the instructions and nothing...the shortcut was still there!!
I installed and ran Spybot, Malwarebytes, ASC and scanned my PC over and over again thinking that could be a virus but fortunately it wasn't.
Today I plugged my memory stick on my PC and I finally could remove the damn empty shortcut!!
It was a picture I had previously loaded from my memory stick to my desktop. It was a Zip file (inside the B1 free Archiver program) and when I searched again with the memory stick plugged the file was there!! I got it and so I went to my desktop again and tried to delete it and it was gone!! I hope this helps anyone having the same problem I had.

I too have had the same problem, but found a solution not already suggested. Simply highlight the icon in question, use the 'shred' option in McAfee Internet Security (if you are running it), and the shortcut is instantly eradicated!

Good luck if you give it a try :)
