I tried to do an upgrade install on my Windows 7 but the installation gives me this error:
The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.

  • [*] You can’t upgrade 64-bit Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 64-bit version of the installation disc, or go online to see how to install Windows 7 and keep your files and settings.

[*] 32-bit Windows cannot be upgraded to a 64-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 32-bit version of the Windows installation disc.

Upgrading Windows will affect the following devices and/or programs:

  • These devices might not work properly after the upgrade. Before upgrading, we recommend updating the drivers for these devices. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel and search for "update device drivers", or go to the device manufacturer's website to search for updated drivers.

  • [*]Storage controllers: A6OEWDSJ IDE Controller
I'm pretty sure I chose the same bit as my current Windows 7 installation and as for the storage controllers, I can't seem to find the driver

Any solution?

Find the latest chipset on Support downloads webpage for your computer or mobo model.

Where did you get Win7? Does it say the same bit version on DVD or download file as is listed on Computer>Properties? If not you'll need to obtain the correct bit version, or boot the DVD to clean install. First make sure there are drivers available for the planned bit version on the Downloads webpage for the computer model.

I already tried to find the driver, but the only available drivers are for Win XP & 2000

You def want to install 32 bit with 2gb of RAM unless you plan to more than double it.

If you are trying an Upgrade install, you have Vista on that rig. Vista drivers work fine in Win7.

Google your ASUS P5KPL-AMA + WIndows 7 and you'll find a lot to read and will learn what you want to do.

Some programs and drivers may need to be installed in http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/316-compatibility-mode.html

I am planning to add more RAM to my computer, however I don't wish to change my motherboard since it usually requires me to do a clean install of the OS

If I install the driver for Windows XP, will it work? or will it just cause more problems?

Some XP drivers work, others require Comtability Mode.

It is not certain that you'll need to supply that SATA controller driver from chipset. You will know when you boot the DVD to clean install as if it isn't found on DVD then no HD will show up on screen where you choose where to install Win7. Then you can try to insert it from CD or stick at the Load Drivers link below that window.

Did you determine whether you're running 32- or 64-bit now, and which bit version the DVD you have is for? Do you have the other bit version disk? Which do you want to use, for an in-place Upgrade or a Clean Install?

Apparently you didn't check your mobo downloads page because there are drivers for both bit versions of Win7: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Motherboards - ASUS P5KPL-AM

Do you want to install 32 bit or 64 bit? What version is installed on your computer, and what version is on your DVD? Do you have the other version if necessary?

I'm pretty sure I'm running on 64 Bit Windows 7, and the DVD I have contains 64 Bit Windows 7 too

I just wanted to do an in-place upgrade without losing my data & programs

BTW, if I upgrade my motherboard, is it possible to do an in-place upgrade or anything without having to do a clean install of the OS?

The mobo in your specs is very up to date and has drivers for all OS's. So why would you want to upgrade it?

It's your RAM you need to upgrade as 2gb is not enough for 64 bit.

Did you go Start>rightclick Computer>Properties to see what bit version you are running?

I just checked it, and the system type says I have 64-bit operating system

What does it say on the Win7 DVD or its download? Where did you get it?

I got it from a retail store, and it has all of Windows 7 versions in it

Should I download and reinstall the chipset from the Mobo download page?

Good idea.

Be sure to back up your files externally as upgrades can fail and not even roll back.

Make your Vista recovery disks if you haven't already.

okay, now for some reasons the setup files won't start
It's listed in the processes tab of task manager, but the installation windows won't show up

EDIT: Nevermind, the setup is working again. But the storage controller problem still exist!

Hello woop7, welcome to Seven Forums!

This is only partly correct, all full retail full installer DVDs have all versions of Windows 7 included but you have to unlock that feature to access it using the method outlined in this tutorial at the link below.

A 'real' Windows 7 installer is only 32-bit OR 64-bit, it cannot be both.

If you have one of these disks it was created by someone and is not a 'real' retail installer.
