Can't edit files in roaming folder

Hi,

my OS is windows 7 sp1 x64, and I have the following problem:

I wanted to edit an XML file in the folder
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default\searchplugins

While I can edit the file, firefox will not recognize the changes that I made to the file.
I tried to start my editor with administrative privileges, but this didn't help. I had the same problem before, with a file that was located in the programs folder. I was able to change it, but the program didn't recognize the changes.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be?

Hope someone here can help me, thank you in advance for any advice.

Have you tried making those changes in the program itself?
Could be that file you are editing is a backup of the real original file.
Make the change in the program and then look at that file to see if it reflects the changes.
Also do a search for *.XML and see if there is another file with a similar name in some other folder, like a folder for the Firefox program.

Unfortunately you can't edit these xml files in firefox.

Good idea with backup, I searched the entire disk, for files with the same/content, but didn't get any results. Also, if I remove a file from the folder, firefox does recognize, that it's gone, so it must be the right folder/files.

Boy, this is really frustrating. I never had the problem under Windows XP, is it possible that Windows 7 has some type of security layer that is working against me?

An example.

Close Firefox. Edit "search.json" in your profile folder, find "google.com/firefox" and replace it with your preferred URL (be careful not to change anything else, including quote marks in the file). Save the file. Close it and restart Firefox

You may want to edit the original google.xml file too, so that you don't have to repeat this if you create a new profile at some point.

If you are unable to edit then you may have some permissions set which prevent you from doing so.
