So I have a large HDD which I have been juggling some information on. I am now left with a 500gb partition with all my data, and 1TB of free, unallocated space. However when I now try to expand this volume to use all the unallocated space, Windows disk manager only let's me do so if I create a dynamic volume, which I don't want. So is there any way around this, or any idea what might be causing it?

So how exactly does an extended partition work? Will I be able to have 1 partition? Or will I need multiple partitions. In the past when I had this issue I just cleared the drive and formatted it with a new single volume. I might just do that, space is a bit of an issue, but the main thing is what a pain it is waiting for Windows to copy all the files there and back. I'm curious as to why exactly it has to become a dynamic partition.

Not sure what's going on, but-----it looks like you have enough free space on F to temporarily hold whatever is on M.

If you copy the M stuff to F, you might then be able to better control the partitioning on that large drive with another tool, such as diskpart or Partition Wizard.

Right, well I've had this problem with this drive in the past too, I think perhaps there is something up with it, but anyway... I moved everything off the drive, wiped it and created a new partition the full size of the desk, and all is good now. Not the best solution to the problem, but a solution nonetheless. Thanks for the help :)
