Have a new action cam that has a 2 GB sd card to give 1 hour recording, all I have to do is format it in Fat/Fat 16 nothing else.
But windows 7 only has NTFS Fat32 and exFat.
Can anyone advise me how to get round this problem?

Your camera itself would have an option to format the card. Look around in the camera settings.

Agreed, the best device to format the card would be the camera itself. What is the make and model number of it?

its a Oregon Action Cam and there is nothing in the manual or on the unit to say format.
They only say use a 2 GB max sd card formatted to Fat16!
Thats all I know was going to try my Fuji fine pics SLR camera!

Is your Camera the ATC 3K model? If not which model is it? That aside I think you should have a User manual. Look in there for format or under "Preparing a new SD card". Sometimes manufaturers use odd descriptions when they mean Format. But always format throgh the camera. The chances are that if you format in another manufacturers camera then it wont work in yours. It is also good practice to delete video clips from the card through the camera. Again sometimes if you delete through Windows Explorer the card wont record in your camera and again once done in WE you can't then format in the camera. Does that all make sense. BTW if you have the above model there is internal memory, not much but enough to test the works. Interested to hear if you intend doing any video editing as with these action cameras you get a lot of "hose piping" which needs to be got rid of to make a reasonable action video. Sorry might be "teaching grannie to suck eggs" here!

Its an ATC 2K bought through Aldi and all they mention is erasing video! In the Addendum page they talk about conecting the Action Cam via USB to PC after the drivers install right click and format selct Fat or Fat 16, all very basic but im using Win 7 but even when I boot to my XP OS I still dont get the option of Fat / Fat 16 thats why im at a lose. So I thought of an externat format! Bob

I think they mean right click on the software that you install from the supplied CD. Have you installed the software yet?

Have been doing a search on your camera and it would seem that it is no longer in production as it does not appear on the manufaturers website and the only manual I can find is for the 3k model. Looking at that it would appear that after you insert the card and operate the camera it should start recording to the card without any formatting. You maynot be able to find a driver for Windows 7 so you may find that your PC will not be able to recognise the camera,. This is no great worry, there are a couple of ways round this. When eventually you get something recorded to an SD card you can take the card out of the camera and use a card reader to transfer the video clips to your PC. If you haveen't got a built in card reader in your PC have a look to see if your printer takes a card so that you can print direct from the card? If it does you can use this sytem and it will show up as a removable drive in your system root.If all else fails you will need a card reader - the ones on a USB stick are very convenient and very cheap.
Try recording to the card and see what happens!

Will take onboard everything and will see what happens when my card arives! Will have a play with it and let you know.
The camera didnt have a software disk and I have tried some short recordings using the internal memory and all works well with Windows 7 I find that my Fuji Phine Pix software grabs the files and all have played well.
I know im probably jumping the gun as I tried to see if I could format in Fat etc using a micro sd card so I was ready when my new SD arived and you know the rest.
Thanks for all the help so far will come back to you all ASAP.
Regards Bob

I don't think the card will need formatting. It looks from the manual as if it will record straight away to a new card. It will format in the camera automatically I think. I have two camcorders and that's what happens with them. I am always carefull though to only delete files whilst the card is in the camera. I did delete the files from one card whilst the card was in my internal card reader an it wouldn't then take any further recordings in the camera.

That is good news. Still interested in what you intend using the finished videos for? More precisely, how to you intend showing them, On your PC or on a TV? Also will you be editing them at all? If so what program will you use?
Please keep us up to date with progress

I can veiw the recorded movies on my PC using my Fuji Film Phinepix software it works well even with Windows 7 and on my TV using my Netgear EVA9000 digital Entertainer this alows me to watch all my stored video files in DVD, Mpeg234(Divx) formats and more via a wifi link. They play well over my samsung 40" LCD TV.
I wanted to use the camera for recording the condition of my Loads on my Lorries Trailer while at work.
It just lets me have a record of there state in case there is a problem, managers cant get out of it!;).
The video is good enough for this and its hands free as I can fit it to my Hard Hat.
Will let you know if I get any more problems. Regards Bob:D

Quite an unusual use for a sports action camcorder but very practical!

Glad that you got it going, By the way you could have used the command line (command prompt) to do format with other options than the defaults. See "format /?" for instructions.

sd card format solution

you don,t need fat16.the only thing that matters that you get your sd card formatted on your pc to make it blank at the whole length.
download disk wipe v1.5 by google search
compatible with windos 7 x64
insert your sd card and select drive in the program
in says drive not regignezed but don,t mind that
go to disp wipe icon on the left and select your format.ntfs, fat ,fat 32 and format
in happens twice ,klick stop at the first time
than your sd card is blank and will be regognized on you mobile phone or camera on the full capacity of your sd memory card
it wood solve your problem
choose fat32

As stated early on, it's best to let the device format it itself. However, if the device doesn't offer that option (such as a generic MP4 player that I have) and it doesn't support FAT32, I had to find a way to format it in FAT16.

From a WINDOWS 7 command prompt, you can type "Format /FS:FAT E:" assuming E: is your sdcard.
